Position overview
Position title: University of California Observatories Postdoctoral Scholar
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $60,000. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See current salary scale for Postdoctoral Titles.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: September 1, 2023 (start date negotiable with candidate). Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

Position Description


The Fast and Fortunate for FRB Follow-up (F4) Team at the University of California Observatories (UCO), University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), Northwestern University (NU) and the Maria Mitchell Observatory (MMO) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar under the direction of Professor J. Xavier Prochaska with co-mentoring by Professor Wen-fai Fong (NU) and Director Regina Jorgenson (MMO). The successful candidate will be expected to conduct forefront research on topics related to fast radio bursts (FRBs). F4 performs follow-up observations in collaboration with a number of groups discovering FRBs (e.g. CRAFT at ASKAP, MeerTRAP at MeerKAT). Along with other team members, the selected candidate will have access to the Keck and Lick Observatories, data from the DESI experiment, and a large computer cluster at UCSC. The candidate can also qualify for a Visiting Scholar appointment at NU. Observers interested in FRB research - from the cosmic web to the origin of these enigmatic sources - are encouraged to apply. The position includes the opportunity to become involved in mentoring early-career collaboration members such as post-bac and graduate student researchers. This position will be based at University of California, Santa Cruz and will work closely with other NU and MMO researchers.

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in astronomy, physics, or a related field and three years research experience (while obtaining Ph.D. or post-degree) in the field observational extragalactic science.
