This is an exciting opportunity to join the new School of Sustainability, Civil and Environmental Engineering, bringing together the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with the Centre for Environment and Sustainability, as we seek to recruit two members of academic staff (one permanent, one for two years (in the first instance)). We are looking to appoint highly qualified and inspirational individuals with a collegiate approach and passion for teaching and research. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with research interests in the areas of resilience and smart infrastructure; Building Information Management (BIM); digital civil engineering and candidates with industry/design experience.

We offer highly praised undergraduate BEng/MEng programmes with excellent employability prospects, together with a suite of popular and innovative MSc degrees in both contact and distance learning modes.

The School formed part of a very successful REF 2021 return in Engineering, with 93% world leading or internationally excellent outputs. Research in Civil Engineering is organised into thematic groups: Air Quality, Geomechanics, Infrastructure Systems Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering.

The Role Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will contribute to teaching of Structures/Geotechnics at undergraduate level (including design modules) and at MSc level in their specialist area, and to the wider taught programmes in the School.
  • They will join one of the research groups and undertake cutting edge research resulting in world leading outputs with professional impact.

Essential Skills Required

  • A background in civil engineering and a research profile in Geotechnics or Structures.
  • Research in Structures focuses on innovative design, maintenance and renewal of infrastructure assets, e.g. sustainable materials and hybrid construction, fatigue and damage assessment, structural health monitoring, adaptation/repair of highway structures and their foundations, multi-hazard risk and resilience frameworks.
  • Research in Geotechnics pertains to geothermal and ocean energy systems including offshore wind, liquefaction and dynamic soil-structure interaction of on/offshore structures, advanced soil testing (Resonant Column, Cyclic Simple Shear, Scaled Modelling), and computational methods (DEM/FEM).
  • Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant research field.
  • A growing record of high quality impactful publications and involvement in initiating and submitting grant applications.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching or potential to achieve this and design experience.
  • Success in attracting funding are significant advantages
