The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science, and to provide scientific results for national and international environmental and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scales, and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University.

The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES

starting from 1 January 2023 at the earliest or as agreed for a fixed-term of five years.

The university lecturer is expected to develop and coordinate teaching and teach at the Bachelor level for the upcoming Una Europa Joint Bachelor in Sustainability, for which INAR and the Department of Chemistry will lead a combined study track on Climate, Physics, and Chemistry. Una Europa is an alliance of 11 European universities, which will build fully integrated curricula and jointly award the degrees (https://www.una-europa.eu). Teaching in the Faculty of Science’s Master’s Programme in Atmospheric Sciences, as well as in the Climate University, is also desirable. Climate University is a collaboration project of several universities to foster climate change and sustainability education (https://climateuniversity.fi). Teaching will be carried out at the Faculty of Science’s Kumpula Campus in Helsinki and at the Hyytiälä forestry field station, 200 km north of Helsinki. International teaching mobility is encouraged by the Una Europa alliance. The university lecturer also participates in the supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral theses. As the field develops rapidly, the university lecturer is expected to actively follow the advancements of the field in the scientific and professional spheres, and to participate in national and international working groups. The university lecturer is also expected to conduct high level research in one of the research areas in the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research.

Qualifications

The appointee to a university lecturership holds an applicable doctoral degree. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. We are looking for candidates with a demonstrated experience in international collaboration and project coordination. When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention is paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Experience in collaboration with stakeholders outside academia and science outreach are considered as merits.

The candidate must be fluent in English, knowledge of Finnish is considered a merit.

What do we offer?

The position is fixed-term for 5 years including a trial period of 6 months. The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary range is from 4000 to 5500 euros per month.
