Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

The fellow hired for this position will join the team at the Tuskegee University Archives (TVA), a team that includes a group that is working with the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture on a wide variety of projects. We seek a scholar of the highest caliber who will bring new ideas, new energy, and a commitment to collaborative and collegial work at one of the South's top digital humanities center. Tuskegee University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence among its faculty and staff. Work at the TUA is highly collaborative, including faculty, staff, and students in multiple projects and candidates should demonstrate a past record of working in teams and/or collaborative environments.

The projects the fellow will undertake will be either (1) identified by the TUA and assigned to the postdoctoral fellow for further development or (2) proposed by the fellow and approved by the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture (SMAAHC). The TUA will provide project oversight, policies, procedures, and templates for all research projects. The priorities of these projects will be determined by the TVA. The fellows will provide regular updates to the TVA, and occasional updates to other relevant parties.

The Postdoctoral Fellow may be invited to contribute to the teaching of history at Tuskegee University as a guest lecturer or by conducting workshops for faculty. While the Postdoctoral Fellow will not have any required teaching responsibilities there may be an opportunity to teach.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in American History with an emphasis on civil rights history, archival and field research experience;
  • Candidates must have prior experience as creators of digital history products.
  • Teaching experience in digital military history.
  • A demonstrated thoughtful approach to teaching and learning military history.
  • Experience working in teams.
