Job Description
Terrestrial Sciences CGD Postdoctoral Fellow I -
Full Job Description
The postdoctoral fellow will perform original research towards advancing our understanding how carbon-climate relationships on interannual timescales differ among tropical continents, and what are the implications for long0term changes in the terrestrial biosphere carbon cycle with climate change. This work will rely primarily on the Community Earth System Model and the Community Land Model (CLM).
This work is part of a NASA collaborative project that involves scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is related to other ongoing projects across the Terrestrial Sciences Section. As such, the Postdoc Fellow will have ample opportunities to interact with interdisciplinary scientists within and outside NCAR.
located in Boulder, CO.

- Drawing on the CLM Perturbed Parameter Ensemble, identify optimized parameter sets for mean state and interannual variability for the tropical regions carbon cycle.
- Determine the processes that driven carbon flux interannual variability and the regionally-dependent carbon-climate sensitivities. Run and analyze sensitivity experiments with data-constrained CLM5 to establish how temperature, precipitation, and radiation control tropical carbon cycle IAV.
- Run and analyze updated hindcast and projection period simulations with data-constrained CLM5 to evaluate impact on long-term carbon cycle trends.
- Take the lead and participate in writing of scientific journal articles. Present results at relevant meetings.
- A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in the earth sciences. Demonstrated understanding of carbon cycle dynamics. Demonstrated record of high-quality research and publication
- In-depth knowledge of carbon cycle processes and their representation in Earth System models.
- Expertise in parameter estimation.
- Ability to work collaboratively with related earth system scientists within/outside NCAR.
- Strong skills in written and oral communication of research results, including in an interdisciplinary context.
- Strong competence with data, program and file management and scripting (eg bash, csh) in UNIX
- Experience in super-computing environments (e.g., computing clusters)
- Experience with machine learning
- Competence with analysis and scripting in Python
- Competence in reading and modifying FORTRAN, diagnosing models at the code level
