Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction in a variety of topics and disciplines related to Information Technology to students through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. IT Instructors teach hardware, software, security, networking, and operating systems courses as needed as well as other specialty areas.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general supervision from department chair.

May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants and work study students.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.

Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.

Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.

Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed.

Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.

Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.

Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.

Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields related to information technology; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.

Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.

Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

Fill in for other instructors as needed.

Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various texts book and select books to be used for future classes.

Assist in the recruitment of students from community high schools.

Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.

Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress and qualifications for graduation.

Demonstrate community involvement.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Computer hardware and software, security, networking, and operating systems.
  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures related to the delivery of IT courses.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
  • Online record keeping systems used by the college.
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

. making observations

. reading and writing

. communicating with others

. operating assigned equipment

. handling varied tasks simultaneously.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

  • standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • operating assigned equipment
  • preparing and presenting instructional material.

Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:

  • making sound decisions
  • responding to questions
  • demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:

AAS in Information Technology or Computer Science. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

A degree from an accredited college or university or specialized training at the level required to meet SACS criteria for academic and professional preparation of the assigned area of instruction.

Minimum Experience:

No experience is required.

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher are preferred.

Teaching experience in various distance learning methodologies and learning management systems is preferred.

License or Certificate:

Industry certifications are always preferred for instructors in information technology.
