Position Description
City College of San Francisco is looking for innovative mathematics teachers who are dedicated to making a difference in the educational experience of a diverse group of students representing a wide range of skill levels and learning styles.

City College is one of the largest community colleges in the United States. We serve students with a wide variety of educational goals including vocational certificates, associate degrees, and lower division requirements that lead to transfer to universities.

The Mathematics Department at City College aims for the success of every student through quality instruction with high academic standards.


Job Duties
1. Teach community college credit mathematics courses such as algebra, statistics, trigonometry, calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra.

2. Perform duties associated with instructing students and assessing their progress in relation to identified student learning outcomes.

3. Contribute to departmental functions including, but not limited to, committee work, staff meetings, and curriculum development.

4. May serve on college-wide participatory governance committees.

5. Teach day, evening, and/or weekend classes at one or more campus locations, as required.

6. Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds (Required).

2. Earned Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT ;

OR
Earned Bachelor’s in either of the above from an accredited institution AND a Master’s Degree in Statistics, Physics, or Mathematics Education from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT .

Higher degrees are accepted.

Desirable Qualifications
1. A Master’s Degree in Mathematics that includes graduate level coursework in standard areas such as algebra, analysis, and geometry/topology. Additional coursework in such subjects as statistics and/or physical science.

2. Successful experience in teaching mathematics.

3. Successful experience in the development and review of curriculum as well as the assessment of student learning.

4. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively the full range of lower division college mathematics, including precalculus, statistics, calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra.

5. Successful experience working with a Learning Management System ( LMS ), such as Canvas.

6. Successful experience with remote teaching, including familiarity with current technologies such as Zoom.

7. Demonstrated ability to teach effectively students with widely varying mathematics backgrounds, skill level, and learning styles.

8. Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse community college environment.

9. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.

10. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in a professional setting.

11. Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and functions of a community college.

7. Submit two explanations, written for students and using no more than one page for each: (please attach to “other document 1” and “other document 2”)
A. Describe an example to introduce and motivate Hypothesis Testing in an Introductory Probability and Statistics class.
B. Explain to a first-year calculus student the difference between a definite and an indefinite integral.
