Learning Scientist, Assessment Design
Job Description
LEARNING SCIENTIST, ASSESSMENT DESIGN, Comparative Media Studies/Writing-MIT Scheller Teacher Education Program (MIT-STEP), to design and research assessments for high school project-based learning math curricula as part of an interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities include designing, testing, and conducting research on assessments for project-based learning math units; working with a design collaborative to create summative and formative assessments; building capacity for assessment design in the lab and beyond; coordinating with partner schools/institutions; adapting and creating research instruments; leading and supporting studies using mixed methodology for design-based research; grant writing; and publishing findings for scholarly and practitioner communities.
The ideal candidate enjoys working at the intersection of research and practice; is comfortable navigating ambiguous challenges in education; and likes asking questions, making potential solutions, and researching the why and how as a member of a collaborative team.
REQUIRED: earned doctorate in learning sciences, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, assessment design, education, cognitive psychology, or related area; expertise in assessment design for open-ended projects, including how to validate instruments; expertise in mixed methods with a focus on design-based research; experience working closely with teachers on designing and developing formative and summative assessment; interest in advancing excellence and equity in education through improving classroom learning; excellent communication and technical skills; and ability to work independently and contribute to an interdisciplinary team. PREFERRED: five years’ assessment design experience; knowledge and experience with project-based learning at the high school level; experience as an educator in formal/informal education with middle or high school youth; knowledge of and experience with high school math education; experience with data visualizations and data analytics; grant writing experience; and ability to work on an ever-evolving project. This is a temporary, twelve-month position with the possibility of renewal depending upon funding.
A hybrid work schedule is possible. Weekly onsite presence is strongly preferred, but we are open to primarily remote work with occasional visits.
