Post Doctoral Fellow

As part of the Diagnostic Assay Validation Network (DAVN) project, this position is responsible for the Molecular Identifier genetics for plant pathogen diagnostics design, curation and beta testing of a database and user-interface system for diagnostic assay development and validation. Additionally, the applicant will be expected to generate publications on validation statistical processes using the novel sequence database and develop a collaborative relationship with microbiologists and bioinformaticists across fields and within the project team. The successful candidate will work with UF, OSU and USDA ARS Faculty on the following ongoing and envisioned projects:


1. Develop and beta test microbial genomic database
2. Participate in development of implement user interface tools and output formats; and
3. Publish novel, cutting-edge research on computational and statistical considerations in genomic-metagenomic uses of novel, informative sequence data for plant disease diagnostics.


A scientist is needed that will:

  • Collaborate with DAVN scientist team in experimental design, execution, analysis, and validation for development of diagnostic informative sequence sets
  • Develop a cutting-edge research program focusing on novel uses and development of bioinformatic validation of genomic probes.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required:

Ph.D. in Plant pathology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, genomics, phytopathology, molecular biology genomics, or related field.

Cross-disciplinary and strong analytic skills
Hands-on experience in plant disease diagnoses
Hands-on experience developing diagnostic assays
Highly organized and self-directed individual who is able to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment
Phylogenetics and molecular plant pathology
High throughput sequence analysis packages (e.g. EDNA, Samtools, GATK, QIIME, Tophat, Cufflinks, Kraken2)
Experience with metagenomics/16S/18S data analysis
Statistical packages (e.g., R)
High performance computing

Proof of computer language training and proficiency

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
English language writing proficiency and grantsmanship
Strong organizational and troubleshooting abilities
Familiarity with genomic technologies
Proficiency with genomic data, tools, and databases
Experience with bioinformatics analysis desired
Demonstrated attention to detail and analytical skills
Excellent time management skills, especially involved the simultaneous management of multiple projects
Experience in software management strongly desired
Leadership skills and ability to work well in a team environment

Preferred:

Experience in pathogen diagnostic methods

  • Knowledge in virology, mycology, bacteriology
  • Skills in bioinformatic processes and computer coding
  • Aptitude and organizational skills needed for database development and curation.
  • At least 2 years of postgraduate training in academic or industry research is required with expertise operating in a high-throughput production environment
