Essential Functions

The program director/chair for the Associate in Engineering program and Engineering Discipline Chair & Program Director is primarily responsible for providing leadership to the Engineering faculty and for assisting the dean with all activities and concerns relating to the Engineering curriculum and instruction. In addition to fulfilling the terms of appointment as specified in the contract of employment, the Program Director is responsible for fulfilling the following duties: this includes planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating specific program components services, personnel, and related activities aligned with the BEST Department’s strategic direction and the college’s strategic plan. The director/chair will work closely with the Dean on matters related to and for the benefit of these programs

Job Duties

Leadership:

1. Provides oversight for the Associate in Engineering program
2. Supports employer engagement and community-based initiatives in the Associate in Engineering program and all programs in Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades
3. Regularly examines program and labor market data to achieve equitable outcomes in student’s Access, Completion, and Transfer/job placement. Identify, plan and schedule public classes on the main campus and other Durham and Orange County sites. Coordinate the class schedule with other site directors/chairs
4. Supports or coordinates professional development activities for faculty to align with the strategic direction outlined by the Dean of Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades
5. Explore funding opportunities and build capacity to expand programs for equitable access and transfer for bachelor’s degree seekers
6. Supports new initiatives in the Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades Department
7. Expand continuing education to curriculum options for equitable on-ramps to curriculum programs and off-ramps to living-wage work.
8. Initiate advertising and other promotional strategies for marketing the Associate in Engineering program to community organizations in Durham and Orange counties
9. Supports active recruitment of students from underserved communities by engaging with Pre-K-12, community-based organizations, and workforce development boards in Durham and Orange County.
10. Work with business, industry, and government training staff(s) to develop courses when applicable.
11. Supports full integration of equipment and seamless pathways aligned within all Meta Majors, notably within the Building, Engineering, and Skilled Trades Department

Management:


1. Personnel Management:
a) Assign, supervise and evaluate program faculty, aides, and other assigned program personnel;
b) Provide for the professional development needs of all assigned program personnel;
c) Maintain current job descriptions and other required personnel information; and,
d) Interview and recommend the appointment of full and part-time faculty and provide for orientation of new program employees.

2. Program Management:
a) Develop, revise, and evaluate the instructional program, facilitating innovation in curriculum and instructional development;
b) Execute the revision and distribution of all plans of study, course outlines, and other curriculum information, including a copy for publication;
c) Maintain an effective program advisory committee to support the curriculum program;
d) Support the functions of the Office for Curriculum Development, including adherence to all facets of the academic change process; Ensure that the program is in full compliance with the requirement for accreditation, certification, and/or other standards stipulated by appropriate external agencies; and,
e) Develop and maintain productive relations with those businesses, industries, universities, and other organizations in the community that are pertinent to the program and prospective graduates. The college may hold contracts, other agreements, or arrangements.

3. Financial Management:
a) Prepare and administer the program budget efficiently and effectively, regularly monitoring the status of expenditures, maintaining necessary records, and filing reports;
b) Recommend program needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, and materials, facilities, space, and other resources, maintaining functional facilities and equipment, and maintaining security and inventory records;
c) Support preparation and processing of contracts for part-time faculty, aides, contractual services, external agencies, and other financial agreements; and,
d) Maintain records of program personnel absenteeism, leave requests, tardiness, and premature departures; collect and distribute related documentation via the appropriate administrative channel.

4. Instructional Management and Supervision:
a) Prepare semester course offerings and class schedules which meet the program requirements and the needs of students, ensuring that the instructional resources of the program are being utilized efficiently and effectively and that the program’s mission is being met;
b) Supervise and evaluate the operation of all classes/labs being conducted within the assigned function of the program, including visitations today, evening, and off-campus classes, and other instructional activities;
c) Ensures that individual program faculty schedules are being developed and fulfilled, including adequate provisions for teaching loads, office hours, student advisement, lab preparation, committee work, and other institutional activities;
d) Maintain supportive relations at all times with all other units and branches of the department, the division, and college and assisting them in carrying out their respective functions and securing their cooperation for the program operation;
e) Otherwise ensure that accountable instruction is being provided at all times; instructors are on time and prepared, all classes/labs are adequately covered, instruction is conducted as scheduled, and course and program objectives are being met.
f) Supports creation and management of all aspects of the hiring process to fill needed positions-Interview and hire qualified part-time instructors that meet the credential requirements to teach the course subject matter and, when applicable, the licensing agency. Ensure candidates are receiving an effective orientation and in-service training.
g) Acquire suitable facilities for classes and support instruction with needed resources.
h) Review all textbook adoptions and supplies. Coordinates with all publishing representatives for ISBNs and best pricing. Reviews and adopts online labs, if applicable.
i) Prepare the program budget, monitor the status of expenditures, and maintain necessary records.
j) Supervise the development of training programs and materials by instructors. Maintain outlines and all evaluations of courses.
k) Facilitate communications between the directors/department chairs, instructor, and Durham Tech staff for courses being developed and/or taught. Make regular class visits to assess the quality of instruction.
l) Monitor the results of course evaluations and provide appropriate feedback to instructors.

Teaching and Learning:

5. Develop annual goals, objectives, and strategies for continuous improvement of the programs offered and maintain an awareness of current trends in curriculum and continuing education and training.
6. Supports Culturally Responsive Practices/Leadership/Pedagogy critical to advancing educational opportunities and outcomes for minoritized and marginalized student populations.
7. Periodically review and evaluate discipline course offerings, facilitating innovation in curricular and instructional development
8. Oversees continuous improvement in instruction, creates new programming/services to support student achievement, and responsive to student and faculty concerns/issues.
9. Monitors and coordinates the effective delivery of instruction within programs. Oversee preparation of course offerings and class schedule that meets the skill requirements of employers and the needs of students.
10. Supports innovative scheduling to build early momentum towards completion and credential attainment for all students, particularly African Americans and Latinx populations
11. Lead an active advisory board committee to inform curriculum, instructional technology and increase WBL opportunities.
12. Maintain a teaching load as established by the Dean, Vice President/CAO, and/or the President within the range of 9 to 12 contact hours per semester, given the requirements of the program and as otherwise permitted by the demands of the position;
13. Maintain orderly and clean classroom and laboratory facilities, including storage rooms and assigned office.
14. Recommend appropriate and relevant instructional technologies to enhance discipline offerings.
15. Working knowledge of the business and industry community within Durham and Orange counties.
16. Personal qualities and work style to indicate compatibility with a team approach.
17. Perform all other standard administrative requirements expected of and assigned to management staff, including committee assignments within and without the division, community and professional involvement, and other such activities or functions.
18. Perform other appropriate duties as necessary to adequately support the Continuing Education and Curriculum areas as assigned by the Dean, Vice President/CAO, and/or the President.

Program/Discipline Specific Responsibilities:

1. Recommend appropriate revisions in course outlines to build early momentum towards completion across student demographics;
2. Coordinate the acquisition and maintenance of equipment and the maintenance of special facilities.
3. Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Dean in meeting the needs of the college;
4. Work closely with local high school liaisons to support seamless and equitable on-ramps from AE-CCP pathways to the Associate in Engineering Degree Program;
5. Keep abreast of developments/revisions to the Baccalaureate Degree Plans within the University of North Carolina System Schools that impact the AE degree program and engineering courses;
6. Pursue partnerships with universities that house engineering schools, and;
7. Pursue WBL opportunities for engineering students, including internships, engineering competitions, and contact with representatives from engineering schools at local universities.

Other Duties:

1. Represent the programs, the department, the division, or the college in institutional assignments, community affairs, recruiting events, professional activities, and uphold such involvement among program members;
2. Provide support and assistance to the Student Engagement, Development, and Support Staff in conducting student recruitment and registration, determining admission requirements and procedures, the orientation of new students, job placement of graduates, tracking of graduates, and other related activities, and;
3. Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned by the dean, the vice president/CAO, and the President.

Required Working Hours

A minimum of a 40-hour work week as determined with the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include evening and weekend hours.
