Organization Overview:
The Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) is a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and is the leading resource in the United States for those affected by Lewy body dementias (LBD). LBDA is dedicated to providing outreach and education to families impacted by LBD, raising awareness of LBD among the general public and medical profession, and advocating for increased funding for LBD research.

Once seen as a rare disease, LBD is now considered the second most common form of neurodegenerative dementia in older adults and affects approximately 1.4 million people in the United States alone. It accounts for more than 20% of all dementia cases.

The Opportunity:

The Director of Scientific Initiatives will play a pivotal role in supporting LBDA’s mission by driving LBDA’s research strategy, developing and implementing research grant programs, and increasing engagement of the scientific communities, peer organizations, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Director of Scientific Initiatives will also help LBDA drive greater understanding of LBD among lay and professional audiences and advance early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a scalable clinical research program for LBDA that will grow with the organization’s finite financial resources over time.
  • In collaboration with the VP of Strategic Partnerships, develop and lead business strategies that create partnership opportunities with biopharma.
  • Collaborate with LBDA leadership and scientific advisors to engage researchers, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, government, and nonprofit stakeholders to establish relationships that advance LBD clinical research; cultivate relationships throughout the business and regulatory communities to advance LBDA’s goals.
  • Increase LBDA’s visibility and reputation as an international patient advocacy organization and research funder; represent LBDA at relevant scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Lead the engagement and management of LBDA’s Scientific Advisory Council, Industry Advisory Council, and other relevant committees and working groups.
  • Direct the LBDA Research Centers of Excellence (RCOE) program, in close collaboration with the Coordinating Center.
  • Collaborate with academic researchers in LBDA’s RCOE program on RCOE-related grant proposals, manuscripts, and other LBDA research collaborations.
  • Develop and lead LBDA’s research grant program.
  • Oversee LBDA’s education, outreach and patient engagement initiatives to increase research participation.
  • Develop content on research and clinical advances as needed for LBDA’s communications needs, tailoring the content to the identified audience (such as the public, professionals, and researchers).
  • Consult and share insights with LBDA program and communications staff as they create, tailor, and market educational programs that bring the patient and family perspective to biotech and pharmaceutical companies and government partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Medicine or a PhD in a scientific field from an accredited college or university
  • Five or more years of experience in biomedical research, preferably in the neurosciences
  • Proven experience as a leader of complex, multi-stakeholder research initiatives with a demonstrated ability to envision, design, and manage such initiatives.
  • Strong, current working knowledge of the pharmaceutical/biopharma industry and drug development and regulatory process
  • Proven track record in cultivating and managing key relationships and consortia, bringing academic and corporate stakeholders together with government agencies to achieve diagnostic and therapeutic progress.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, along with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels in various fields.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in or with non-profit organizations strongly preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Travel requirements = approximately 20%. Domestic and international air travel as well as ability to travel to meeting locations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $150,000.00 per year
