Opportunity for an outstanding academic to be involved in both teaching and research at Sydney Conservatorium of Music Administration

Academic Level A, Base Salary $79,784 - $107,516 p.a. + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The Jazz course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is Australia's oldest and most highly regarded jazz program. Entry to it is by competitive audition and the standard of the student cohort is universally high.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • utilize your industry and community networks to benefit students and the wider Conservatorium;
  • translate jazz composition and/or performance practices into classroom teaching contexts;
  • deliver lectures, tutorials and assignments that give students the scope to develop subject matter expertise in areas about which they are passionate;
  • teach music skills and music performance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels with an emphasis on jazz composition and arranging, but also encompassing principal study, jazz improvisation classes, jazz history, and ensemble classes;
  • actively work with student recruitment and audition process to develop more opportunities for young jazz musicians to study at the Conservatorium;
  • actively contributing to faculty activities and academic administration;
  • working cooperatively within a team; and
  • apply your experience as an active jazz artist to provide guidance tailored to students' abilities across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

About you

  • a doctoral degree - or near completion - in jazz
  • evidence of tertiary teaching experience in jazz-related activities such as jazz composition and arranging, jazz harmony, jazz history and jazz music performance
  • evidence of continuing professional experience in the fields of either jazz composition and arranging, jazz performance or both
  • evidence of an active research profile or published recordings
  • strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work cooperatively.

Desirable:

  • a DMA or PhD in jazz (or related discipline)
  • demonstrated capacity to coordinate administrative functions relevant to the tertiary education environment.

There will be three components of the selection process: a 20-minute master class, a 20-minute lecture recital, and a 40-minute interview. The audience with consist of the Selection Committee, students, and staff members. All three components will occur live in one day; depending on the panel's availability that will be scheduled for 6, 7, 8, or 9 December.
