Job Description

A new position is available for a Post-doctoral Researcher in Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences at Marquette University with a start date of October 2022. The researcher will work with Dr. Marta T. Magiera on supporting research project focused on STEM thinking and STEM integration in an undergraduate mathematics problem-solving course for prospective elementary school teachers. The full time appointment is for 12 months with a 1 year extension option based on the mutual agreement of the PI and Post-doctoral Research Associate.
The post-doctoral researcher will have access to a wide range of University resources that support academic research, professional development, and well-being, and will have opportunities to interact with a vibrant campus-wide academic community. Marquette University is a Catholic, Jesuit university located near the heart of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Essential Functions: As part of a collaborative team led by Dr. Magiera, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to significant aspects of the project, including the development of curricular materials, data collection and analysis, and dissemination efforts). Successful candidate will be highly motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team, contribute to peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations, and mentor students involved in the research.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position will involve the development and testing of curricular materials to support prospective teachers’ understanding of STEM thinking as shared STEM disciplinary practices in the context of problem-solving.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Qualifications include a Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in Mathematics Education or related discipline (e.g., teacher education, mathematics, cognitive science, STEM education). Applications ABD (all but dissertation) may be considered on a case-by-case.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Candidates with skills in a subset of the following are especially encouraged to apply:
  • experience in mathematics teacher education.
  • experience with mixed methods research.
  • experience with curriculum design.
