Job Description

A full time Postdoctoral Scholar position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Andre Palmer, Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering and Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Dr. Palmer’s laboratory engineers novel hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers for a variety of applications in transfusion medicine and tissue engineering as oxygen therapeutics. His lab is also developing therapeutics for the detoxification of hemoglobin/heme/iron, non-heme based plasma substitutes, and monocyte/macrophage targeted drug delivery systems.

The prospective candidate will collaborate, design and conduct research on the research projects described above, under the guidance of Dr. Palmer. They will participate in research activities; perform analysis of data and prepare results of research for publication; plan and design research to test hypotheses; assist PI with grant proposals to obtain outside funding from federal agencies; develop, adopt and implement new laboratory methods.

PEGylated megahemoglobin for use as a red blood cell substitute Engineering a novel biomaterial for oxygen transport applications Bioengineering a Dual Function Protein Construct to Detoxify Heme and Hemoglobin Next-generation polymerized hemoglobins for use in transfusion medicine Hemoglobin, Heme, and Iron Scavenging for Improved Burn Injury Outcomes

The candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering or related field and background in protein biochemistry is desirable, but not essential. The candidate will work in a collaborative team environment, while being expected to be a self-motivated investigator who can manage their time efficiently. The position will assume some management roles within the laboratory, in particular management of supplies, ordering and oversight of undergraduate and graduate researchers.
