BASIC FUNCTION:
A post-doctoral research associate position is available in the Dept. of Biology at Howard University. The post-doctoral research associate will be responsible for genome assembly, genome assembly and phylogenomic analyses associated with the Rumex genome evolution project. This is a collaborative project with the National Museum of Natural History. The post-doctoral research associate on this project will bring a skillset in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics. In addition to performing data analysis and manuscript development, post-doctoral research associate will also assist with mentoring undergraduate researchers on this project. The expected commitment for this position is 40 hours/ week. Initial hire is 1 year. Work for this position will need to be conducted on site at Howard University, with potential for limited remote work at discretion of the Principal Investigator.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Familiarity with genome assembly platforms and algorithms
  • Advanced training, and evidence of publication, with phylogenetic analyses
  • Experience with bioinformatics in unix-based command-line computing environments, including working with and diagnosing unfamiliar programs and file types.
Preferred Competencies:
  • Significant experience with R and functional knowledge of either Perl or Python.
  • Familiarity with diverse reproductive systems in plants
  • Experience mentoring trainees from diverse backgrounds
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related discipline, with degree completion by August 2022.
