Job Summary

The Disability Resource Center is recruiting TypeWell transcribers to provide communication access and notes to Deaf or hard-of-hearing students. The transcriber will use a sophisticated software program on a laptop computer to listen to class lectures and discussions and rapidly record the information in complete English sentences, to be viewed simultaneously by the student readers. The transcriber will also voice the comments and questions posed by deaf or hard-of-hearing students, as needed.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Types material from spoken lectures and discussions into a computer using sophisticated abbreviation software; locates documents in files when revisions are requested and inserts, deletes, corrects, and emails documents as necessary; rapidly sets up and breaks down equipment in classroom settings and regularly relocates equipment to different locations; operates peripheral equipment such as printers, desktop computers, copiers; maintains equipment and evaluates hardware/software to determine suitability; performs application programming operations (enters specialized vocabulary into software as needed) to assist in the rapid and accurate translation of spoken information into electronic and print materials; identifies and takes corrective action to resolve routine operational problems. When providing TypeWell remotely, assists with troubleshooting connection, audio, and other technology used to connect with the student.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of coursework at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience providing TypeWell in a variety of STEM courses.
  • Ability to provide on-campus TypeWell services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of TypeWell Basic Skills Course.
  • At least 1 year of experience providing TypeWell services.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices when working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, especially in educational settings.
  • Excellent listening skills and demonstrated ability to identify essential components of orally presented information; excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and academic vocabulary; ability to operate a PC/laptop computer and other peripheral equipment (copier, printer); ability to listen to and rapidly understand spoken English; ability to rapidly restate the full meaning of what is heard in classes and meetings, in correctly-formed English sentences; comfortable working in an academic setting with diverse populations.
  • Must be able to work hours that correspond to students’ schedules, including occasional evenings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
