Job Description

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with strong background in the integration of multi-omic data (e.g., metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metametabolomics) with metabolic models in environmental systems (e.g., sediments, soils, surface water) that contain highly diverse microbial communities. The candidate will use existing and new data generated through the WHONDRS consortium (https://whondrs.pnnl.gov/), PNNL’s river corridor science focus area (RCSFA) program (https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/river-corridor), and the Genome Resolved Open Watersheds (GROW) database. There will be opportunities to pursue regional, continental, and global scale river corridor microbiology (e.g., spatial analyses of metabolism) and to develop metabolic models linked to reactive transport models that integrate hydrology with biogeochemistry and microbiology. WHONDRS, RCSFA, and GROW span large interdisciplinary projects focusing on elucidation of transferable principles governing river corridor ecosystems. There will also be opportunities to interface with other projects spanning scales and systems (e.g., soil-focused efforts). Duties will include modeling of multi-omic data, with an emphasis on linking metabolic, biogeochemical reaction network, and reactive transport models preferably within the KBase (https://kbase.us/) environment. The candidate will be expected to generate peer-reviewed publications and open source modeling/analysis tools, and will have opportunities to engage with the Integrated, Coordinated, Open, and Networked (ICON) Science Cooperative (https://icon-science.pnnl.gov).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to analyze, model, and interpret multi-omic data from environmental systems containing diverse microbial communities, with a preference for experience with river corridor and below-ground systems. Demonstrated modeling, informatics, and programming experience for analysis/modeling of/with diverse types of data (including multi-omics) using contemporary scripting languages such as Python and R, as well as R Markdown, Jupyter notebooks, and GitHub. Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in the peer reviewed literature, and to make outputs (e.g., code, data) openly available and aligned with FAIR principles. Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required.

Ph.D. in environmental microbiology, biogeosciences, or related field.
