Job Summary
The Bowdoin College Education Department invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow to join Assistant Professor, Alison Riley Miller on a NSF-funded collaborative research project with colleagues from the Maine Math and Science Alliance. Over four years, the project, Bridging Preschool and Kindergarten Science: Exploring Play-based Engagement with Scientific and Engineering Practices in Early Learning Environments (NSF #2201673) will investigate how and to what extent preschoolers and kindergarteners engage in scientific and engineering practices (SEPs) in play-based learning environments, and what spaces, materials, and pedagogies support and extend those engagements. A parallel research effort will investigate how and to what extent early childhood educators’ participation in professional learning and peer coaching experiences impact children’s opportunities to engage in SEPs through well-supported and deeply engaged play.
This is a three-year appointment, starting as soon as September 1, 2022. The annual stipend for this benefits-eligible position is $55,000.
Essential Functions:
- Manage communications with school partners and research team members
- Oversee and mentor undergraduate student research assistants
- Organize and manage project data, participant consent forms, IRB protocols and communications
- Contribute to development of instruments, interview protocols, and frameworks for analysis
- Analyze and synthesize data (both qualitative and quantitative)
- Co-author presentations and publications
- Demonstrate a commitment to valuing diversity and contribute to providing an inclusive working environment.
- Work effectively with others and perform to the best of personal abilities to successfully accomplish individual, departmental, and College goals, as well as punctual and regular attendance
- Adherence to and enforcement of College policies as necessary
- Other duties as assigned
Education/Skills Requirements
Applicants must have received, or anticipate receiving, their PhD by December 31, 2022, and those who expect to receive their PhD by December 31, 2022 should provide documentation from their home institution confirming this schedule.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in educational research and scholarly writing, must have experience working with teachers and students in educational settings. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to participate in all aspects of instrument development, data collection, analysis, and writing, and should demonstrate competency with both qualitative and quantitative methods for data analysis. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a doctorate in Child Development and Early Education, Science Education, Learning Sciences, or a closely related field. A valid driver’s license and the ability to comply with the College’s Motor Vehicle Policy is required. This position is subject to a criminal history background check and motor vehicle record check.
Standard Work Days and Hours
This is a three-year appointment, starting as soon as September 1, 2022. This is an exempt position requiring time commitment necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements. Typical hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm but evening and weekend on call coverage may be required.
