POSITION SUMMARY:

Big Bend Community College, a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington, invites applications for a TRIO Student Support Services program Academic Advisor in the college's TRIO Student Support Services Department. The purpose of the TRIO Student Support Services program is to retain and graduate low-income, first-generation and disabled students. This position is responsible to provide proactive recruiting and retention support for academic, career and transfer advising services for STEM program participants. This position works closely with Counseling, Financial Aid, Admissions/Registration, and Disability Support Services to provide services to all eligible participants.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist with recruitment, selection, and orientation of new Student Support Services STEM participants.
  • Advise students on academic, personal, career, financial aid and economic literacy, and transfer planning through workshops, a first-year experience course, and individual counseling/advising
  • Maintain a caseload of STEM-interested Project Participants by assessing individual needs and providing services and activities which lead to academic success
  • Assist students in completing scholarships, financial aid, and college/university applications
  • Lead workshops for students in various topics such as study skills instruction, financial planning, STEM careers, and STEM-transfer advising.
  • Coordinate and supervise four-year college campus visits (focused on STEM-transferring), academic, and cultural activities
  • Maintain timely and accurate records including contact logs, case notes, and files. Assist with data management, surveys, and program evaluation.
  • Provide program participants information and referrals to all appropriate college student programs, college departments, community resources, and program-sponsored online tutoring.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of program’s first-year experience course and transfer summer bridge program
  • Disseminate information regarding Student Support Services program to campus community
  • Participate in related professional conferences and in-service activities. Participate in college activities such as new student registration and serve on committees that focus on improving the success of students who are from traditionally unrepresented in postsecondary education.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in counseling, social work, education, or related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • One or more years of professional experience assisting students in the target population (first generation, financially disadvantaged, and/or differently abled students) and/or individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Experience advising and/or assisting students, especially traditionally underserved or underprepared students

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM-related discipline or related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to program participants.
  • Preference given to someone who has worked with STEM students.

In addition to the minimum and desirable qualifications listed above, we desire candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to serving Latinx and other underrepresented student populations in higher education.
