Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Purpose:
Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) seeks an energetic and detail-oriented Military and Veterans Advisor to provide comprehensive and intensive enrollment, advising, and Veterans Administration (VA) benefit services as part of the Admissions and Advising Center with the goal of improving student success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Military and Veterans Advisor will be responsible for the College’s compliance requirements from the VA and all other military-related organizations. The advisor will serve as the College’s VA certifying official. The advisor will have a comprehensive knowledge of all college policies and procedures, including the application, enrollment, placement, and orientation processes. In addition to providing a wide range of pre enrollment services for new military-related students, the advisor will also provide advising for current military-related students in all educational programs by appointment and on a walk-in basis. The advisor will have a comprehensive knowledge of all transfer, occupational/technical, and workforce services programs offered at the College. The advisor will have the responsibility of assisting military-related students with their needs and concerns and will help them monitor their progress toward successful attainment of their educational goals.
Specific responsibilities and functions include:
  • Manage the benefit/financial assistance process of all active military and veteran students
  • Ensure the timely completion and submission of eligibility documentation/paperwork to the VA on behalf of the students
  • Ensure the timely completion and submission of all compliance audits and reports required of various military related organizations
  • Serve as the case manager of all military-related students, including being the primary communicator with other PVCC offices (e.g. Business Office, IRPIE, Financial Aid, etc.)
  • Ensure that each military and veteran student is maintaining sufficient academic progress in order to continue receiving VA benefits
  • Work closely with external agencies such as the VA and individual service branches on behalf of military and veteran students
  • Manage the recruitment and admission process for all active military and veteran students
  • Work with all veteran and active military students on all phases of the enrollment process, from application, to placement, to registration and payment
  • Refer veteran and active military students to support services such as counseling, financial aid, and tutoring, and to appropriate academic support services
  • Develop and review curricular and advising plans with all veteran and active military students
  • Provide comprehensive transfer planning and advising to veteran and active military students, including information on guaranteed admissions and articulation agreements
  • Review veteran and active military student transcripts, military experience, and prior academic work
  • Maintaining accurate numbers, demographics, and indicators of success of military and veteran students

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities
  • Ability to work in a dynamic student environment and with a diverse student population
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in student services, higher education, or related field
  • Experience in a higher education or school-related environment
  • Experience in admissions, academic advising, or related function; Experience in a community college setting and commitment to its mission
  • Prior military work experience, preferably in a school-related setting or working with military-related benefits
  • Prior military service
  • Ability to focus on student success
