Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Physics (Andeen Lab)
Full Job Description
The Physics Department at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in astroparticle physics for research on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory/IceCube Upgrade/IceCube-Gen2.
The IceCube group at Marquette is a young but well-established and well-funded group leading both the cosmic ray composition data analysis and the development and testing of new prototype IceAct telescopes for the South Pole. In this position there is a great deal of opportunity for creativity, leadership, and learning in a supportive and energetic environment. The Marquette group has a strong track record of support for physicists from historically underrepresented groups and dual career couples.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will undertake a variety of activities within IceCube’s cosmic ray working group. These activities may include analyzing data to study the composition and energy spectrum of cosmic rays, generating simulation to accompany cosmic ray analyses, and developing and designing hardware and software for a new surface array at the South Pole.
The Physics Department at Marquette University is focused on excellence in undergraduate research and teaching, so the successful candidate will also be expected to support undergraduate research students in our lab and to help coordinate and run outreach events.
The PI of this group works hard to ensure that this postdoc is well-supported and that their work is well-showcased. Previous postdocs in this position have traveled extensively both nationally and internationally to conferences, collaboration meetings and workshops (including to the South Pole for detector upgrades), have had the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses, and have successfully achieved tenure track faculty positions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Earned doctorate (or its foreign equivalent) or appropriate terminal degree.
Earned doctorate in astroparticle physics or a related field, computer programming skills (C++, Python, or similar), ability to work both independently and collaboratively, interest/willingness to work with undergraduates, willingness/interest to attend meetings, workshops and conferences. Excellent communication skills in English.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Previous experience with IceCube or another large astroparticle or particle physics experiment strongly preferred. Experience working with (testing, designing, etc) hardware for extreme environments strongly preferred. English language proficiency required. Experience traveling internationally and foreign language experience helpful but not required.
Open until filled. Applicants should send—a cover letter, CV with list of publications, a research statement summarizing your past achievements, and contact information for three references who will be contacted if you are a finalist. Apply by October 15, 2022, to ensure full consideration.
