Position Summary:
The Instructional Design Manager is responsible for the overall quality of instruction and assessment for all courses and solutions within their designated product area— [Student Learning or Professional Learning]. The Instructional Design Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining the quality and consistency of the learner experience within their designated product area. Supported by curriculum research, best practices, and sound pedagogy, the Instructional Design Manager is responsible for ensuring all standards-driven content, including content and assessment writing, instructional media, and teacher support materials, are relevant, accurate, effective, and accessible to all learners and produce positive student outcomes. The Instructional Design Manager provides leadership and mentoring for instructional design staff working within their designated product area to ensure that all products maintain Michigan Virtual’s expectations for quality.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Department and Instructional Design Leadership:
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director, Learning and Assessment Design this role implements best practices to drive instructional excellence across IPDs product solutions.
  • Serves as the internal expert for current digital curriculum in their designated product area, articulating the overall research, instructional approach, and development history of the products for internal stakeholders.
  • Actively participates in department leadership to contribute to planning, budgeting, monitoring, and ongoing reporting against the production schedule to ensure department is meeting its commitments to the organization.
  • Promote a problem-solving mindset to review, analyze, recommend, and drive process improvements focused on delivering quality and cost-effective products through effective and efficient implementation of instructional design principles.
  • Promote a collaborative, cross-functional team environment to support the organizational strategies and priorities across IPD and within the Instructional Design team.
Product Leadership and Portfolio Management:
  • Collaborates with the Instructional Designer(s) to advise and guide the instructional design of all products within their designated product area including new courses, course revisions, and course maintenance.
  • Is responsible for the instructional integrity of products within the designated product area.
  • Collaborates with the product team to ensure instructional content for the product meets business/market requirements and that the product is standards driven, educationally sound, and meets the needs of the customers and students served.
  • Serves as a Senior Reviewer for all instructional and assessment content within their designated product area.
  • Applies course quality (e.g., Quality Matters) and Accessibility (e.g., WCAG 2.1) in the development and evaluation of courses.
  • May take on the Instructional Design role for a specific product as needed.
  • Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with a specific project including product budget, on time delivery and quality to meet the business/market.
  • Monitors health, quality, and effectiveness of existing products and recommends maintenance as needed to maintain currency, relevancy, and accuracy of instructional content.
Resource Management
  • Recruits, trains, and mentors instructional design staff in the designated product area to ensure professional growth, product consistency, and overall adherence to Michigan Virtual’s hallmarks for online digital content.
  • Recruits content writers, subject matter experts and curricular resources; Partners with the Instructional Designer to train design resources, review and monitor content quality, and monitor deliverables to ensure on time delivery.
  • Establishes, monitors, and maintains a master resource plan to ensure all solutions within the designated curricular area have the appropriate resources to meet the product requirements.
  • Maintains a network of writers and curriculum experts to ensure timely resourcing and consistent quality across products.
Job Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Strong knowledge and application of curriculum and instructional design, effective instructional strategies, and learning theory in designing digital content.
  • Proven track record of designing and developing effective online solutions for the K-12 education market delivered on time and within budget, for the K-12 education market.
  • Demonstratable history of strong team leadership, team building, and mentoring skills. (Supervisory experience preferred)
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills and an aptitude for analyzing complex issues and developing the appropriate solutions.
  • Experience in implementing process improvement and internal controls.
  • Ability to effectively operate within a diverse environment with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills including the ability to work with and through people to establish shared project goals, objectives, and action plans.
  • Experience in developing and training staff and overseeing compliance.
  • Flexibility and the ability to accommodate change.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Proven ability to effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to tailor communication to an audience to achieve the desired result.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Masters degree in educational technology, instructional design, curriculum and instruction or equivalent degree from four-year college or university.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in instructional design, online content/curriculum development or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience designing digital content for blended and online learning.
  • Supervisory Experience Highly Desirable.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has direct management responsibilities for the Senior Instructional Designer Instructional Design, and the Instructional Design Specialist. Additionally, this position will have oversight for external contract SMEs, writers, and designers.
