SwimRVA and the Director of Development:

SwimRVA is a non-profit organization committed to ensuring every child in the Richmond region learns to swim. SwimRVA is dedicated to being the region's aquatics advocate and leading through innovation. We operate the region's world class aquatics center along with three other locations throughout the region. We provide service to five jurisdictions and serve over 500K individuals annually through our programs, events and service. As a growth-based organization, SwimRVA staff relies heavily on each other to accomplish targets in alignment with the mission of the organization. The right candidate will have a can-do spirit and committed to the long-term success of SwimRVA and the Richmond region.

We are seeking an energetic Director of Development to join us amongs the cobblestones of Richmond, VA. The DOD's work will be instrumental in our efforts to eradicate unintentional drowning in our region and provide a life skill that will drive health, wellness and quality of life for thousands. The SwimRVA Director of Development will support the Executive Director in planning and implementing various fundraising and development strategies. SwimRVA Development is a multi-faceted development program that includes a four-year program funding campaign (FY20, FY24, FY28), capital campaigns for new facilities/improvements and a traditional annual fund drive. The DOD will interface with key board committees and support their work with agendas, donor lists, research and stewardship. The right candidate will be proactive in their approach and able to design giving programs, events, and donor cultivation strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the Executive Director with development and delivery of a four-year program funding campaign
  • Leads and works with the SwimRVA grant writing team to ensure annual calendar of grants and grant reports are submitted on time
  • Develops and leads a comprehensive annual giving program, including strategies to incorporate direct mail, e-campaigns, giving circles/clubs with a focus on new donors, donor retention, major gifts, and increasing annual gift amounts of individual donors
  • Responsible for managing donor pledges and reminders
  • Manages SwimRVA sponsorships, stewards organizational sponsors and supports the Executive Director in soliciting new sponsors with appeal creation and data tracking
  • Responsible for implementing administrative and donor-related activities for the annual campaign while utilizing the support of SwimRVA Communication and design teams
  • Manages and maintains donor database ensuring accurate donor information
  • Balances donor database with organization finance department to ensure accuracy of gift and annual giving
  • Serves as staff lead for special events including coordination of all special event committees and volunteers
  • Provides organization, production and maintenance of annual fund materials and data
  • Responsible for planning and implementing multiple direct mail appeals and newsletters, including mail-house, mailing schedule, theme, and artistic concept
  • Evaluates every appeal and newsletter to develop analysis on past giving trends and program results, and plans for market segmentation for future mailings
  • Supports the Executive Director in board development, meetings and functions
  • Interfaces with community leaders in support of the Executive Director and board priorities for regional aquatics advancement

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree preferred
  • 5 years of experience in fundraising
  • Prior experience working with boards, coordinating events and volunteers
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with Google Drive and Google applications
  • Experience navigating and using donor databases (SwimRVA utilizes Bloomerang)
  • Ability to think big picture
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative working environment
