Job Description
Under the direction of the CEO and Acting Chief Development Officer of the Kean University Foundation, the Senior Director of Development is responsible for managing a team of gift officers while directing a major gifts program securing 6-, 7-, and 8- figure gifts in order to achieve annual fundraising targets.
Entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, and possessing equal strengths in frontline major gifts fundraising and team leadership, the Senior Director of Development will thrive in a dynamic fundraising environment. This position serves as a crucial team member as s/he leads the expansion of Kean University's national/international alumni network of support for major and planned gifts, working collaboratively with his/her peers to identify new major giving prospects as well as fueling the pipeline for legacy giving. The Senior Director of Development will also be responsible for partnering with Foundation leadership to ensure team accountability and adherence to best practices and policies in support of overall fund development strategies.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the development and execution of robust fundraising strategies in alignment with an overarching strategic plan for the Kean University Foundation.
- Develop and promote a culture of coaching, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Institute individual and team metrics to ensure top-level performance.
- Plan and execute sophisticated prospect strategies to ensure ongoing financial support for the Kean University Foundation.
- Oversee the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewarding of the Foundation's major gift (6-, 7-, and 8-figure) prospects and donors.
- Coordinate prospect strategies in conjunction with the University's objectives to advance the interests of Kean.
- Work closely with Foundation leadership and University colleagues to deliver on goals and
objectives.
- Personally develop and manage a portfolio of approximately 150 financial prospects.
- Maintain knowledge of planned giving arrangements, pertinent tax laws, and other factors related to substantial gifts.
- Respect integrity and appropriate donor confidentiality.
- Represent the Foundation and the University at conferences, seminars, or meetings as required.
- Address the Foundation's Board of Directors regarding fund development strategies and the status of major gifts (as needed).
- Ensure that donor records and files (both electronic and hardcopy) are current and accurate.
Qualifications
- BA/BS or equivalent
- 10+ years of experience in major gift fundraising/campaign work, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated ability to build, lead, empower, and mentor a team of experienced fundraising professionals.
- Successful track record in personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing seven-figure gifts.
- Demonstrated success in cultivating productive, collaborative relationships with faculty, administration, Board members, alumni, students, volunteers, friends, and/or staff within a complex organization.
- Ability to create and promote a professional work environment that rewards individual and collective success, builds confidence and promotes diversity in all its forms.
- Results-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and adapts easily to change.
- Effective time management skills.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of budget preparation and the ability to understand financial statements.
- Ability to recognize and navigate circumstances that require exercising sound judgment and critical personal skills.
- Experience with Raiser's Edge or other fundraising software.
- Ability to travel.
