Full Job Description

Post-Doctoral Fellow:
Perform scientific techniques or research protocols. Assist the Principal Investigator in designing and performing protocols. Design and perform experiments. Collect and log research data. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. May mentor research assistants and students.

With the assistance of the mentor, find and write research grants with the goal of obtaining additional research grant funding. Responsibilities may also include coordinating correspondence with applicants and grantees, acknowledging receipts of proposals, and maintaining a system to track proposals.

Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated.

Prepare and present presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.

Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Research Associate:
Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.

Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.

Unique Duties

Abdulghani Sankari, MD, PhD is a Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University and a VA Physician Scientist. Dr. Sankari recently has a new research funding from VA. The proposed is designed to explore if daily acute intermitted hypercapnia can induce respiratory recovery in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). He is seeking post-doctoral fellows interested in this research area.

- Candidates with expertise in non-invasive measures of respiratory function are required. - Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to recruit Veterans with SCI.

  • Ability to perform instrumentation on patients with SCI and conduct physiological and respiratory recordings.

  • Perform data summary and statistical tests.

  • Participate in drafting and editing scientific manuscripts of research studies as requested by the PI.

  • Present research progress regularly to the PI and his research team.

  • Participate in presenting data in scientific meetings as requested by the PI.

  • Take responsibility in protecting the scientific data, managing the set up and record of studies

Qualifications

Post-Doctoral Fellow:
Doctorate degree. Requires advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, predominantly intellectual in character. This knowledge is acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.

Job related experience can include doctorate training. Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred. Must have distinguished themselves in research. Prior recipient of funding for research based on individual achievements.

Ability to work independently. Ability to secure grants and funding for research. Ability to collect, analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results to the field. Knowledge of and experience with current scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.

Research Associate:
Bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.

Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)

Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred.

Ability to work independently. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD with experience in respiratory physiology.

1. Post-doctoral candidates with expertise in invasive and non-invasive measures of respiratory and autonomic function during wakefulness and sleep are preferred.

2. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

3. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

4. Willing to perform experiments in human research laboratory.

5. Adequate prior training on human studies is required.
