The Fine Arts/Mass Communication Division supports students pursuing associate degrees and certificates across a range of disciplines including, fine and performing arts, journalism, humanities, and film. The college opened a new performing arts center that includes a mainstage, studio theatre, and recital hall. The college also maintains a state-of-the-art fine arts complex that includes a gallery and film studio.

Under the general supervision of the Dean, the Theatre Technical Design Specialist works with faculty, staff, and the Theatre Production Coordinator to meet the logistics and technical aspects of staging college, professional touring, and community productions. The Theatre Technical Design Specialist provides guidance and oversight to crews and additional technical support during events.
Summary
Coordinates, schedules, and oversees student crews, and performs technical work related to the construction of scenery and sets for productions, and use of the scene building areas by students, staff, and the community. Provides technical, logistical, and instructional support to theater production and coursework by overseeing and performing technical activities, set construction and moving, lighting, sound, special effects, and other services that support staging of theatrical productions. Maintains a safe and functional scene shop.

The Theater Technical Design Specialist is a specialized position assigned to performing arts productions and curriculum within the District. This position requires demonstrated competency to instruct and oversee others in set and scenery construction and other technical aspects of theater production.
Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbents assigned to this position are qualified in stage management, set design, stage lighting, and audio, but may concentrate in one area depending on the nature of productions and theatrical needs. Stage Set Design
- Plans and coordinates scenery construction by meeting with directors, advisors, and others to determine needs, materials, budgets, timing, and construction requirements. Designs scenery and props as required.
- Draws construction prints using computer-aided and/or manual drafting techniques. Prepares multi-dimensional views. Prepares material lists. Searches existing inventory for scenery and materials that can be modified to fit production needs.
- Constructs scenery and sets based on approved designs. Performs a variety of skilled carpentry duties such as, but not limited to, rough and finish work, scene painting, and assembly.
- Provides technical oversight, guidance, and training to student theatrical crew members in basic theater practices, theatrical scenery design and construction techniques, and safe work standards.
- Oversees the work of student assistants in the construction of scenery and sets. Plans and sequences construction and assembly steps, and schedules student crews accordingly to meet deadlines. Trains students in use of tools and construction techniques.
- Oversees and coordinates the troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of theatrical staging equipment and facilities. Maintains a preventive maintenance program and contracts for repairs as necessary. Ensures the cleanliness and organization of the scenery shop and storage areas.
- Maintains continuous accessibility of the shop and storage areas to theater production, class, and outside group uses. Stores and inventories scenery that can be re-used. Removes and properly disposes of other scenery.
- Coordinates, and arranges the staging of theatrical lighting, sound, video and other equipment and/or assets, as required for performances. Determines the sound and lighting requirements that enhance viewing of sets and performers.
- Designs stage lighting and sound/effects for events that include writing of lighting cues.
- Provides on-site technical expertise at theatrical events, providing guidance and assistance to theatrical groups and personnel with regard to lighting, sound, and special effects.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains theatrical equipment and facilities. Maintains a preventive maintenance program and contracts for repairs as necessary. Inspects sets and equipment for safety and operability.
- Programs light boards and present panels. Operates lighting, sound, and projection equipment. Sets up, patches in, and tests microphones, speakers, recorders, multi-media, and lighting for events.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the trends in the entertainment industry that apply to lighting, sound, and special effects, including the equipment.
- Develops material lists and purchases and inventories materials and supplies for the operation of performance areas and constructing sets. Monitors production costs and budgets.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the trends in the entertainment industry that apply to stage and set design, lighting, sound, and special effects, including the equipment.
- Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree with courses in technical theater curriculum and two years of experience in design and construction of production scenery. Additional set/scenery construction experience may substitute for some higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in theatre scene design, technical production, or equivalent.
Expertise in technical entertainment production techniques and processes.
Knowledge of theatrical rigging concepts, equipment and techniques.
Experience in employing and maintaining industrial-grade power tools.
Professional experience in scenic design, touring, load-ins, etc.
Commitment to work with a diverse student body in activities and productions outside of the classroom

Knowledge and Skills
The position requires working knowledge of the principles, techniques, methods, and equipment used in the construction of sets and scenery, and other technical aspects of theatrical production. Requires in-depth knowledge of the operational methods of a scene shop, including stage design and scene construction, painting and rigging. Requires indepth knowledge of construction scheduling and sequence methods. Requires a working knowledge of the installation, maintenance, and repair of lighting, sound and other theatrical equipment. Requires knowledge of and skill in using computer-aided drafting and desktop productivity software. Requires skill in the use of hand and power tools that are required for scenery construction. Requires knowledge of safe work procedures. Requires sufficient math skills to compute distance, measurements, quantities, and load bearing requirements. Requires sufficient skill in the English language to prepare written instructions to student workers. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey technical concepts to others, train, demonstrate, and assign work.

Requires the ability to safely use and instruct others in the use of a variety of power and hand tools. Requires the ability to observe, practice, and train others in safe work habits. Requires the ability to obtain certification to use rigging apparatus. Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others
Physical Abilities
Requires the ability to perform work of an active nature. Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk up to 400 yards, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) heavy weights of up to 75 pounds on a regular basis. Requires the ability to push, pull, and guide materials over 75 pounds. Requires the ability to climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch on a regular basis. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information. Requires auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms. Requires near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, observe 3-dimensional views, moving objects, and work-in-progress. Requires the ability to carry on ordinary conversations and to project voice to small groups.

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and exposure to tools, moving objects, dust, chemicals, and noise extremes.
Salary/Fringe Benefits
Grade 40 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($5,221.29 -$6,278.73/month).
Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)
Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security
Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position
Hours of employment are:
Monday thru Friday including weekends. Hours to be determined by the manager.
Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.
Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.
Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.
