Job Description

Post Doctoral Research Associate

Department:
Physics

Reports To:
Department Chair

Position Type:
Staff

Position Summary:
This position is open for an experimental project funded by NSF. A Candidate is expected to live close to Brookhaven National Lab, NY. We are working on development of a multi-user facility with fully automatic data collection at the most advanced synchrotron source, NSLS-II, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmission/reflection (T/R) polarimetry in high magnetic fields (up to ±7 T) and capable of switching between the exact Faraday and Voigt configurations with sample cryogenic temperatures down to 4 K.
In addition, we will develop optics for reflectivity measurements under high hydrostatic pressure in the magnetic field and attachments for in situ sample cleaving, gold coating, and sample surface doping with potassium. The setup will be developed using several major components, including a 7 T optical magnet that will be coupled to the side-load sample stage for cooling, alignment, and exchange between measurements. Two sections, polarization state generator (PSG) and polarization state analyzer (PSA), are designed to control and analyze the polarization and intensity of light that is reflected from or transmitted through the sample. The magnet will be mounted on top of the 3-circle goniometer. The PSA chamber will be mounted on the 2Theta arm of the goniometer.
In addition, we will develop a fully automatic LabView-based control of the instrument and advanced Matlab-based software for data modelling and analysis.

Essential Functions:

  • Carry out optical measurements in a Lab.
  • Prepare samples for optical measurements.
  • Perform data analysis, and (d) will write scientific papers and data reports.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
The expected qualification of a successful Candidate includes some of the following:

  • Magnetic fields, cryo-temperatures, high vacuum, FT-IR or THz spectroscopy, polarimetry or ellipsometry, x-ray or neutron diffraction, synchrotron radiation.
  • Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python for data analysis.
  • Knowledge of 3D CAD and ZEMAX is a plus.
