The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice at Clemson University is seeking highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher in Southeastern Archaeology to assist with an NEH funded project to survey, document and analyze the cultural resources on the campus of Clemson University and within the Clemson Experimental Forest including those related to pre-Columbian and colonial-contact Native American sites, the Revolutionary War era, botanical naturalist explorers, the African American experience in the ante- and postbellum periods, New Deal Conservation, World War II, and natural resource restoration.

The researcher will lead and conduct field survey of university-owned lands in the South Carolina Upstate region with university staff and students, document and database identified sites with the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, and assist in overseeing, organizing, accessioning and supervising the processing, documentation and storage of accessioned materials, written and digital documents, and photographic data. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to produce deliverables derived from the project that meet with their research interests.

The candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated knowledge of archaeological site documentation and field research in a university or collections management setting. Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in pre-Columbian Archaeology and the material culture of the American Southeast. Experience with archaeometry and petrographic analysis is desirable. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position. Start date will be as soon as possible after the closing date.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • conduct field survey of Clemson-owned cultural resources
  • document and report identified site to SC SHPO, - assist in the processing, documentation and storage of accessioned materials
  • build partnerships with campus and community partners
  • collaborate with team members
  • provide mentorship, oversight, and instruction to the project and related staff (undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, faculty)
  • effectively communicate results in workshops, grant submissions, and/or peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field
  • knowledge of archaeological site documentation and field research in a university or collections management setting
  • experience with project development and research collaboration
  • peer-reviewed publications or evidence of publication potential
  • experience with funded research and grants
