About Pellissippi State Community College

Pellissippi State Community College is one of 40 institutions in the Tennessee Board of Regents system. TBR is the governing board of the College System of Tennessee, offering more than 400 programs of study at the state’s 13 community colleges, 27 colleges of applied technology and the online TN eCampus. Culture and Diversity

Knoxville claims a wide range of forward thinking national and international talents. The scholarly influence on the Knoxville metropolitan area bred literary greats including James Agee, Cormac McCarthy, and Nikki Giovanni. Knoxville is home to one of the largest sculptures dedicated to an African American in the country. WORK SCHEDULE:

5 days a week; 37.5 hours per week; meetings as needed; travel to multiple campuses; night or weekend classes; alternative delivery of classes (e.g. web, web-hybrid, cohort, accelerated); no guarantee of summer sections

JOB OBJECTIVE:

To teach and develop COMMUNICATION STUDIES courses while furthering the goals of the program, department, college, and community college system

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

65% A. TEACHING: Develop and teach COMMUNICATION STUDIES courses to a diverse student population using both traditional and alternative delivery formats (hybrid, web, cohort, accelerated). Prepare course syllabi, course materials, evaluate student learning and maintain class records.

20% B. SERVICE/OUTREACH: Participate in program/curriculum development and assessment, student advising, department meetings, and college boards and committees. Perform related duties as assigned.

15% C. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Participate in continuing professional development to improve teaching, evaluation of student learning and classroom technique.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Marginal tasks performed include the operation of standard office equipment such as computer and copy machines.

JOB STANDARDS:

A. Master’s Degree in Speech Communication or Communication Studies from a regionally accredited institution.

B. Minimum one-year related teaching experience at the postsecondary level

C. Understanding and acceptance of the comprehensive community college philosophy.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE:

A. experience teaching public speaking

B. experience using multiple teaching formats, including web-based and traditional on-campus modalities preferred

C. experience teaching in a community college preferred

D. ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships

E. ability to engage in the college’s mission and values

JOB LOCATION:

Candidates should be prepared to teach at any of the college’s five campuses, or online as needed. Travel between sites may be required.

EQUIPMENT:

Some use of telephone, computer equipment, overhead projector, fax machines and other standard office equipment is required. Facility with computer communication systems, learning management systems, and visual aid production a must.
