Job Description

Yakima Valley College is accepting applications for one Retention Specialist/Curriculum Advisor in the Office of the Vice President of Instruction & Student Services Division-College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)-Grandview Campus. This is a full-time 12 month, exempt professional position. Beginning salary is $53,227 annually for 40 hours per week, plus a full state benefits package. This is a five year grant funded position, and is contingent upon continuous grant funding. The grant is expected to end June 30, 2025

Reporting to the CAMP Director, and working in coordination with YVC faculty and programs, the Retention Specialist/Curriculum Advisor for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is responsible for establishing and implementing strategies to increase CAMP student participation, engagement, academic success, and retention during their first year of study at YVC. This position requires occasional travel for programmatic and professional development, and must be available for occasional evening and weekend hours.

The Retention Specialist/Curriculum Advisor commits to equity, provides leadership in the direction of planning, developing, managing, and administrating of academic and retention strategies for CAMP student learning, achievement, and retention; supervise the delivery and evaluation of program services to ensure progress and compliance in the area of student retention and completion of program; establish and implement short and long-term program goals and objectives; represents the college to internal and external constituents; supports the YVC strategic plan; and utilizes working knowledge of policies and procedures of YVC policies and procedures and federal regulations outlined in the CAMP grant under the U.S. Department of Education Office of Migrant Education. The successful candidate will share the programs mission to address changing social, educational, demographic and financial issues that impact service delivery to CAMP participants.

Essential Tasks

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field;
  • Two years of experience conducting student retention;
  • Experience working with first generation or Pell eligible students.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, or related field;
  • Two years of experience with CAMP or HEP programs, or Student Support Services or demonstrated experience in farmworker best practices programs;
  • Experience in a higher education settings, providing educational and personal support to students who are educationally, economically, or otherwise marginalized.

Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide both academic and non-academic support to CAMP participants;
  • Assist CAMP participants in navigating their first-year of college;
  • Advise participants of academic and financial resources available at YVC and make referrals as needed;
  • Create learning communities for CAMP participants, provide information on student engagement/leadership opportunities available at YVC, and refer participants to faculty for community service learning opportunities;
  • Administer comprehensive needs assessments to CAMP participants and advise individual participants on creating a successful educational plan;
  • Monitor and track individual student progress of program participants;
  • Advise CAMP participants regarding core requirements of Guided Pathways and mandatory advising at YVC and make recommendations as needed;
  • Create and maintain individual student files that monitor CAMP student progress through the program;
  • Receive and review academic documents;
  • Maintain advisor student files;
  • Using knowledge of CAMP federal regulations in collaboration with YVC policies and procedures, assist in the development of program effectiveness evaluation reports;
  • Coordinate and implement outreach efforts through community forums, presentations and visits;
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with YVC constituencies such as Teaching and Learning Center faculty and staff, Counseling and Advising, HEP faculty and staff and other YVC faculty, staff and students;
  • Work with the Director in the planning and implementation of a strategic academic, retention, and learning community plans for CAMP participants;
  • Work with the Director in creating individual educational plans and a structured first year experience for program participants;
  • Coordinate, plan, and organize program activities and events for CAMP participants;
  • Participate in professional development to stay current in professional field;
  • Participate in regular meetings with the CAMP staff to maintain current on program and YVC information to share with participants and to plan retention procedures;
  • Learn about and advise CAMP participants about educational opportunities available at YVC;
  • Assist in the outreach for and training of academic tutors for enrolled CAMP participants;
  • Implement academic retention strategies and learning communities for CAMP participants;
  • Serve on committees and assist in developing informational materials in English and Spanish;
  • Assist in the development, preparation, and updating of Guided Pathway Advising materials;
  • Coordinate, plan, and organize program activities and CAMP student events;
  • Assist in the planning, developing, and implementing of academic assistance and career exploration workshops and administer culturally relevant material and assessments;
  • Advocate and communicate concerns impacting CAMP participants;
  • Support and participate in student leadership initiatives;
  • Supervise employees as required

Knowledge of:

  • Educational and developmental needs of Pell eligible MSFW students.
  • Curriculum development, student achievement and learning, and growth-mindset.
  • Mission and goals of the college and program policies and procedures.
  • Computer software applications (i.e., Microsoft Office, Teams or Zoom)

Skills:

  • Strong written, oral, and virtual communication skills, including bilingual and bicultural skills.
  • Planning, developing and performing single or multiple tasks to meet all deadlines, prioritizing, providing follow-up and explaining procedures as necessary.

Ability to:

  • Provide guidance to students who are educationally, economically and otherwise marginalized.
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds with respect to, but not limited to socio-economic, cultural, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, color, marital status, disabilities, Veteran status, national origin, religion, and academic background of community college students and trade union affiliation.
  • Provide open access, academic excellence, shared governance, staff development, and equity.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, peers, supervisors, college personnel, faculty, students, and the CAMP community.
