Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Engaged Learning Office, the Student Engagement Program Manager collaboratively manages student programs that engage government and nonprofit partners who are seeking to partner with UMSI to engage in information solutions to civic challenges. In addition, the Student Engagement Program Manager manages the ELO’s processes and procedures in relation to student engagement programs. This position oversees student program operations, data, and communications in collaboration with the Director.

The Engaged Learning Office (ELO) creates, manages, and facilitates high-impact and transformational student experiences that are essential to advancing the School’s goals of working at the intersection of people, information, and technology. 

ELO programs guide students through the development and mastery of information-related and essential skills, meeting the needs of employers and the broader civic society. The ELO does this through managing a diverse portfolio of student programs that include Citizen Interaction Design, client-based courses, study abroad, and skill-based workshops. The ELO is committed to ethical and impactful collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, global and local community members, and practitioners from the information field. ELO programs align with the University’s engaged learning goals and practices  and are reflective of engaged learning best practices.

Responsibilities*

Program Management (50%)

This role is responsible for administering ELO programs relating to civic engagement in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Civic Engagement. Responsibilities include:

  • Design, administer, and evolve resources, programs, and opportunities for students to engage with civic organizations

  • Actively support the engaged learning experience of students in related courses and co-curricular experiences. Recruit students to participate, schedule events and activities, organize programmatic resources, and coordinate student teams in programs

  • Contribute to, cultivate, and manage the existing network of local government and nonprofit organizations that contribute project ideas and collaborate with students

  • Manage a diverse range of community partners, mentors, experts in the field, faculty, students who are stakeholders in ELO civic programs 

  • Design and facilitate workshops and programming related to teamwork, collaboration, client engagement, and change management in a civic engagement setting

Engaged Learning Office Programming and Initiatives (50%) 

Contribute to the success of the ELO by being a participatory member of strategic planning, data collection, data management, marketing and communications activities, operational and program management software and tools, unit-level assessment activities, temp staffing management, and other operational activities.

  • Co-coordinate the Annual Exposition program, including workshops in advance of the event

  • Working with the OASA Assistant Director of Student Life, coordinate activities that focus on engaged learning with student organizations 

  • Enhance and develop new synergies between existing ELO programs and relationships, recognizing the role as a team member of a diverse portfolio of engaged learning programs, augmenting programs and curriculum with civic education content

  • Lead marketing and communication efforts for ELO events and programs, contributing to the School’s overall process of event and program scheduling and marketing

  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications department to coordinate marketing and story development efforts

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of content and data for systems that relate to Engaged Learning work and student engagement broadly, which includes Airtable, MCompass, internal financial tracking tools, and Salesforce 

  • Ensure that all team members are contributing the necessary information for ELO program success and that information shared is consistent, timely, and produces analytics to help guide the strategy for the creation and closure of ELO programs as based on student participation, client/partner participation, evaluation, and overall assessment

  • Manage student/project grants process for ELO, including advertising opportunities, processing applications, managing the reviewing committee, processing awards, submitting reimbursement forms to OFA, and ensuring that post-award requirements are completed

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience

  • Minimum of two years of work experience in or related to student engagement programs, civic engagement education, civic engagement, or public service

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of people from various industries and levels, and a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty

  • Strong organizational skills with the demonstrated ability to move projects forward, follow up with internal and external stakeholders as needed, and follow through with tasks independently

  • Experience working with a wide range of technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps products and managing data in complex databases

  • Ability to travel within the U.S. for project development and with students for project engagement 

  • Ability to manage multiple, competing duties 

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, and facilitation)

  • Ability to work independently, exercise initiative as a critical member of a small team, and function in a dynamic environment; strong desire to contribute to a developing team in the novel field of engaged learning

  • Ability to set expectations and achieve results while contributing to the broader mission of the ELO, the School, and the University

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field (ex. Information, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Social Work, etc.)

  • Professional experience in the public sector, especially in local government, including demonstrated leadership in building coalitions and collaboratory efforts to address social issues that include and support multiple perspectives

  • Training in facilitation, community engagement strategies, or experience with community organizing

  • Ability to confidently and fluently communicate with academics and employers in technical roles and organizations

  • Past involvement with civic tech initiatives and conversations, at the local or national level 

  • Demonstrated experience in applying design-based or data-centric to civic challenges.

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. Will require working during non-business hours and on weekends. Will require regular regional travel and occasional domestic travel. This role can be hybrid but does require on-site work due to the collaboration needed. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent upon the business needs of the school and/or university requirements.

Work Locations

This position will be based in the UMSI Engagement Center, 777 N. University, Ann Arbor.
