Job Description:

The University of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of Senior Lecturer.

The School of Economics is one of six schools within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The core activity of the School of Economics is to train economists in various fields of economics (financial economics, financial engineering, industrial policy, development economics, local economic development, econometrics, competition & regulation economics, environmental economics, and trade economics).

The applicants to this post are expected to support our Econometrics programme by performing full academic duties that include teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Have strong knowledge of the fields of applied econometrics.
  • Have strong knowledge of time series econometrics, panel data econometrics, macro econometric modelling, micro econometrics.
  • Be able to lecture and supervise Master's/PhD students.
  • Be able to conduct and publish high-quality research.

Minimum requirements

  • A minimum requirement of a relevant PhD degree (NQF 10 level) with strong quantitative background.
  • Sound knowledge of Mathematics and Advanced Econometrics (such as time series econometrics, panel data econometrics, macro econometric modelling, micro econometrics) at postgraduate level.
  • Appropriate teaching and practical experience, proven research ability.
  • The ability to publish research findings in high-ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals is the most important requirement for the position.
  • Strong working knowledge of advanced mathematics/statistics and different econometrics packages such as R, STATA, EViews etc).
  • The candidate must be willing to teach in other areas of economics when required.
  • An excellent record of relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students, especially on master’s and PhD level.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in both Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methodologies at postgraduate level.
  • Proven ability to think critically, analytically, and laterally across disciplines and sectors (transdisciplinary).
  • Fluent in written and oral English communication.

  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office package.
  • Working knowledge of software packages in the fields of time series econometrics, panel data econometrics, macro econometric modelling and micro econometrics.
  • The ability to publish in high-impact journals.
  • The ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Research management skills.
  • Overall management skills.

Recommendations:

  • A strong background in advanced time series econometrics, panel data econometrics, macro econometric modelling, micro econometrics would be a strong recommendation.
  • The ability to publish in highly ranked accredited/ peer reviewed journals.
  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • Experience in online teaching and learning methodologies.
