Position Summary Information


Job Description Summary
Provide support to the Principal Investigator as accorded by the work agreement statement. The Research Scientist contributes in a substantial way to executing current research as well as the creative planning of future research projects and funding applications; plans, designs, and conducts highly technical and complex research projects independently with minimal consultation with the supervisor. Analyses research data and provide interpretations. Contributes substantially and independently to the development of research documentation for publication and/or presentation through the preparation of technical reports, papers, graphs, and/or records. Independently oversees day-to-day tasks for other members of the laboratory, including students, technicians, and postdoctoral trainees. Substantially contributes to the planning, conceptualization, construction, and submission of funding applications and serves as a co-PI/Key personnel on extramural awards.
Responsibilities
Conduct research on the cellular and molecular virology of KSHV infection in B lymphocytes Independently and in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Design and execute research methodology to collect, analyze, evaluate and interpret data.
  • Independently develop and troubleshoot new assays and techniques into standard operating procedures (SOP).·
  • Creatively propose and develop new directions for research activities that can be used to procure continuing grant funding within the scope of the laboratory’s research interests and expertise.
  • ·Utilize and direct the skills of laboratory staff and students to move the research objectives forward by designing experiments for execution and assisting with the analysis and interpretation of results.
  • Collaborate with other faculty with similar research interests on this topic.
  • Prepare technical reports, papers, graphs, and/or records.

Consult and assist Principal Investigator
  • Work alongside Principal Investigator, providing substantial creative input into the determination of method, details, and means of performing the research.
  • Furnish regular updates to Principal Investigator on the progress of research conducted and the supervision of research performed by trainees and staff.
  • Discuss feasibility, desirability, and strategic planning for new research directions and grant proposals.

Laboratory
  • Oversee and direct the daily tasks of staff and students in the laboratory with minimal input from the Principal Investigator.
  • Use equipment and laboratory space according to the work contract
  • Train staff and students on the proper execution of SOP and the correct protocols for safely and responsibly using laboratory instrumentation.

Make substantial creative and scientifically rigorous contributions to the development of research documentation for funding applications, publications, and/or presentations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in immunology or relevant field of research; or its equivalent in research skill and subject matter knowledge by the beginning of employment at Chapman University.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications related to immunology or the cell biology of lymphocytes.
  • Extensive knowledge of research and experimental methods in immunology, molecular and cell biology
  • Substantial experience with flow cytometry immunophenotyping using antibody panels with a minimum of 8 parameters
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Ability to conduct research in a timely manner and document all data.
  • Strong writing skills and computational knowledge.
  • Ability to work alone and/or with student (or laboratory) assistants.
  • Ability to collaborate with Principal Investigator and other faculty before and during research.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to write grant applications including evidence of having previously submitted at least one extramural funding application.
