Position Summary
The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor-Microbiologist. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August 2023. We are seeking a colleague whose interests complement and expand the Department’s existing strengths in wildlife and molecular biology (http://www.apsu.edu/biology). Potential areas of interest include Wildlife/Plant Microbial Diseases, Microbial Symbioses, and Animal/Plant Microbiomes. We are seeking candidates with experience in mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving access of under-served populations to graduate and professional programs in biology. Candidates should have a record of scholarly achievement and demonstrate the ability to develop an extramurally funded research program appropriate for a regional university. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in sustained and substantive research that includes direction of undergraduate and graduate students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching expectations for this position include General Biology, General Microbiology, and Microbial Pathogenesis courses with laboratories, and the development of other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. A typical teaching load is two lectures and two labs per semester.

  • Teaching assignments may involve travel to satellite campuses and/or distance learning formats.

  • Candidates are expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) education and research.

  • Candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising, aid in curriculum development, and provide service to the Department and College.

Physical Requirements
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in biology, microbiology, or closely related field; ABD will be considered if all requirements are met by date of hire;
  • Candidates should have a record of scholarly achievement and demonstrate the ability to develop an extramurally funded research program appropriate for a regional university;
  • Modest research space and equipment will be made available based on synergy with existing faculty research programs; A background search will be required of the successful applicant.
  • Postdoctoral experience is preferred, although not required.
