Job Description

Non-tenured, specified term scientific position. Responsible for the management of a research laboratory.  Conducts research, provides support to various research activities, and trains laboratory staff. Ensures all employees follow laboratory safety regulations and laboratory policies and procedures.
 
Duties:

  • Teamwork. Promote a team-based approach to discuss priorities, identify/solve potential issues, and communicate roles/tasks to complete goals in a timely manner.

  • Technical Approaches. Trained to perform genetic, biochemical, molecular, and cellular techniques in experimental disease model systems including but not limited to: DNA/RNA/protein extraction and quantification, SDS-PAGE/immunoblot, PCR, real-time qPCR, immunofluorescent and immunohistochemistry, biochemical assays, cell culture, rodent colony management, transgenic rodent models, rodent exposures, and mammalian tissue collection and processing.

  • Laboratory Administration. Maintain regulatory compliance (e.g., IACUC, general lab safety, etc.), order supplies and inventory/store properly, general maintenance as needed (e.g., prepare chemical buffers and solutions, sterilize glassware and plasticware, etc.), calibrate and maintain equipment, and keep a clean work area (e.g., wash dishes and tools, change bench pads, etc.).

  • Data Analysis, Report Preparation, and Presentation. Organize, analyze, and visualize descriptive and analytical data to share with the research team and used for presentation and/or publication. Experience with computers and computer software is essential (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, GraphPad Prism, etc.).

  • Record Keeping. Accurately document experimental information in laboratory notebook and digital records detailing experimental design, procedures, and data collection/storage.

  • Literature Research. Access library records for critical review of primary literature pertaining to the biological phenomena studied in the laboratory as well as relevant technical approaches.

  • Personnel Training and Supervision. Responsible for hiring, terminating, training, conducting performance evaluations, disciplining, delegating, and monitoring employee's work.Support training and oversight of new team members d collaborators (e.g., students, staff, etc.).

  • As Needed. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Education: Ph.D. or M.D.

Experience: 36 months Postdoctoral Research Fellow experience

Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of their scientific field
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions or conclusions
  • Ability to compile and analyze data
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with individuals, agencies, and other entities to encourage cooperative strategies or develop information and interpret findings
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in order to prepare technical and research papers, grant applications, and publish and communicate findings to peers and at conferences
  • Advanced working knowledge of computers to store, process and analyze data
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and meet deadlines

Working Conditions: 

  • Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity. Reaching, bending, stooping, and handling laboratory equipment.
  • Environmental: Laboratory Environment. Exposure to chemicals, biohazardous materials, carcinogens, blood borne pathogens, and other biohazards.

Departmental Preferences: 

  • Team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly organized and meticulous to ensure accuracy of data collection and recording.
  • Mastery of genetic, biochemical, molecular, and/or cellular concepts and techniques applied using mammalian cell culture or animal models.
  • Strong experience with transgenic technologies in either cultured cells and/or rodents.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop), and statistical programs (e.g., GraphPad Prism).
  • Publication and collaborative record indicative of a team-science approach and oversight of personnel
