Position Summary

The IT Communications Manager is responsible for managing an overall strategic marketing & communications plan for the Office of Information Technology (OIT); includes strategy for communicating & collaborating with business partners, as well as internally within VP_IT. Additionally, representing the OIT brand, strategy, vision, mission, reputation, etc., in public, and to VP_IT and business partners, through oral, written, and visual communications.

The IT Communications Manager attends site events, project meetings, status meetings, etc.; composes and provides editorial expertise for news stories/articles published in online and print publications, including the WordPress site Info Tech News; composes written and visual communication materials for multimedia, including email, print, online, digital signage, social media, and OIT’s web sites. The incumbent will be required to be available after hours for crisis communications related to outages and emergency situations.

Essential Functions

IT Communications

  • Manages OIT’s strategic communications plan, encompassing objectives, goals, and tools for all written, spoken, visual and electronic interactions with IT team members, business partners, and external audiences, as appropriate.
  • Promotes public relations strategies that will positively influence public opinion, and promotes ideas, products, and services.
  • Prepares and sends messages, including monthly workshop email; IT updates; outage and service interruptions; CIO updates; and internal updates for IT staff; and general updates to the Fordham community. Identifies appropriate audiences for each.
  • Assists with editing and dissemination of documentation of services and user guides.
  • Manages the IT email account and calendar, responds to inquiries from the community.
  • Supports the VP/CIO and the executive team in problem-solving, strategic decision-making and planning for the future of the organization.
  • Oversees WordPress sites (Info Tech News & Events Calendar, Tech Help Video Library) including general backend maintenance and troubleshooting, creating new content, curating content, assisting other staff who need to post content.
  • Manages graphic designer, WordPress consultant, student workers, and other assistants. Interviews and hires new student workers, as needed.
  • Works closely with a graphic designer to create visual communications for print and online purposes on an as needed basis.
  • Manages campus digital signage submissions from IT. Reviews submissions for clarity and adherence to established guidelines/governance. Uploads, schedules, and publishes messages to the digital signage system. Works with the graphic designer, creating slides for IT messaging to display on internal screens and/or campus community screens.
  • Edits Annual Report and other documents coming from IT and going to University VPs.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

General Manager Functions

  • Managerial responsibility within a function.
  • Facilitates meetings.
  • Distills complex subjects into key messages.
  • Assists directors in crafting and delivering difficult project messages.
  • Communicates status, progress, and impact to management.
  • Resolves issues in a timely manner.

Additional Functions

  • Facilitates the All Staff meetings, including managing Zoom scheduling, calendar notifications, hosting the meeting, reporting staff updates, questions.
  • Represents the Office of Information Technology and Fordham University at external venues, such as conferences, either as an attendee or a participant (i.e., deliver a paper).
  • Identifies ways for IT members to communicate and collaborate more effectively – and puts them into place.
  • Supports innovation at Fordham by suggesting new ideas and assisting others to implement and promote their ideas.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in communications, marketing, advertising, business administration, public relations or another relevant discipline.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of Fordham’s culture and environment, as well as the technical, business and cultural environment of higher education in general.
  • Familiar with teaching environment, curriculum development and processes.
  • Strong skills in the performance of the following are required:
    • Independent management of own work flow and work outcomes.
    • Customer service.
    • Ability to interact professionally with staff, faculty and students.
