Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Law School Career Counseling Officer. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Career Development, the Associate Director for Career Development, plays a critical role in the management and supervision of the daily operations of the Center for Career Development which include, but not limited to, the following:
  • Career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates;
  • Develops and implements a wide range of programs, events and activities aimed at increasing the knowledge base of students and alumni, as well as the overall visibility of the law school in the broader legal community;
  • Develops and implements law school’s employer outreach program;
  • Works independently within broadly defined work objectives;
  • Performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of legal education, numerous diverse practice settings and practice areas and effective and innovative job search techniques and strategies;
  • Effectively develops and manages marketing outreach strategies to encourage employers to hire law school students and graduates;
  • Independently identifies strategic and geographic growth areas and develop best practices and innovative outreach programs to establish and enhance recruiting relationships, with a particular emphasis on large law firms;
  • Represents and markets the law school through on- and off-campus employer visits;
  • Actively engages with bar associations and other professional groups, including regularly attending programs and events;
  • Supports employer diversity initiatives through outreach with the Minority Student Program and the law school’s student affinity groups.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility . Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine . Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience plus a minimum of 5 years in a related position within career services, HR recruitment, career coaching/advising, talent development, law practice and/or similar experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Possess a proven ability to foster cooperative environments and to work in a collegial fashion with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience
  • In-depth knowledge of legal environments and legal practice experience essential
  • Understands the complex career development issues affecting law students and the legal profession and is able to provide sound advice and counsel to address those issues
  • Ability to identify and analyze trends in the legal profession and develop and implement best practices for increasing job prospects for students and alumni
  • Requires the regular exercise of independent judgement and an ability to work with minimal supervision under broadly defined policies and practices
  • Demonstrates computer literacy, an understanding and appreciation of career services database software and on-line resources, and the willingness to respond to the needs of students and employers in an increasingly technologically-oriented society
  • Possesses exemplary administrative, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent oral and written proficiency required

Preferred Qualifications
  • J.D. strongly preferred
  • A minimum of four years law practice experience strongly preferred
  • A progressive record of experience in a career development or closely related role, including demonstrated supervision, innovation and leadership strongly preferred.
