Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director, Integrated Academic Support Programs. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of the Learning Centers (LC), the Director of Integrated Academic Support Programs is responsible for oversight and development of the Learning Assistant Program, as well as all academic support programs that are integrated into the structure and activities of course curricula. This position will work collaboratively with all of the LC directors and other academic and instructional support staff to develop and enhance a cohesive set of integrated support services that meet the unique needs of students and faculty for each course. In collaboration with the Coordinator of Integrated Academic Support Programs, the Director will develop policies and procedures, recruit, hire, and train peer leaders (learning assistants and other student leaders providing integrated and in-class support), provide mentorship for peer leaders, and develop, coordinate, and consult on the pedagogy course and ongoing professional development of peer leaders. The Director will develop appropriate assessment strategies and identify best practices in pedagogy and use of peer leaders. The Director acts as the liaison with partnering departments, and will work closely with faculty to develop and expand academic support programs, including the Learning Assistant Program. In collaboration with the LC directors, the Director of Integrated Academic Support Programs will coordinate research and implementation efforts across disciplines, provide support in grant proposal writing in relevant areas, and collaborate with departments and partnering University units to support and develop research and implementation initiatives in the field of academic and instructional support. The Director is expected to be a campus leader in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and to work with the Senior Director and faculty to develop funding proposals to support these initiatives.
Among the key duties of this position are:
  • The Director plans, implements, and oversees services for all aspects of the Learning Assistant Program and other integrated support programs.
  • Acts as major liaison with academic departments offering courses that would benefit from integrated support programs. Collaborates with faculty and academic departments to develop and expand the academic support offered for those courses, which may include collaborating and consulting on course modifications and workshop materials for courses.
  • Collaborates with Associate Director of Training and Professional Development to develop, support, and consult on the Pedagogy of Peer-Led Learning course. Develops, supervises and participates in ongoing professional development training for peer leaders. Recruits and coordinates content area experts to support training of peer leaders in relevant courses.
  • Supervises program assessment, including development of assessment instruments in conjunction with appropriate LC staff members; with support of Program Coordinators and Administrative Coordinators, collects and analyzes data; prepares reports and data summaries for grant proposals. Assists with research in best practices for learning assistant and academic support programs. Tracks student participants to determine program outcomes. Works with appropriate LC staff members to analyze course and participant data.
  • Works with other LC directors and Senior Director to develop budgets and budget reports. Participates in professional development activities and serves on campus or university-wide committees, as requested. Partners with LC staff to address general issues related to all programs and LCs .

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Masters degree in education or related academic discipline
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a related academic or academic support position.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience teaching or direct academic support experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills, understanding of instructional and academic support issues, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, familiarity with current issues in STEM instruction, computer and data management, and data analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of the literature on pedagogy and learning, discipline-based education research, knowledge of assessment techniques, and experience managing academic support programs and supervising student employees. A key skill within this position will be applying education research and known best practices to program activities and consultations with departments and individual faculty members.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in STEM education strongly preferred, as this position will work directly with faculty members, most of whom are in STEM disciplines, and the Director should be prepared to offer consultation related to course design, assessment, and instruction that involves peer-led or near-peer learning. Education research experience.
  • Experience in course design and/or transformation and faculty development.
Equipment Utilized
  • This position will be expected to have a knowledge of standard word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, as well as the ability and skills to work with such analytical programs as are required by the assessments developed.
