The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

1.   Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

2.   Participates in the publication of significant results. Prepares reports listed as agreement with the funding sponsor.  Prepares manuscripts for potential publications. Prepares and provides presentations to funding sponsor and to research community at large.

3.   Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Responsible for project documentation of data and results.  Keeps an archive of all data collected and all results.

4.   Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice. Responsible for data quality control.

5.   Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.

6.   Collects, prepares, analyzes, and evaluates samples associated with project. Will be designing and executing sample collection programs to evaluate the sources of bacteria.  Preparation of data collection sheets for both the field and laboratory.

7.   Coordinates sample collection team and coordinates access to site to collect samples.

8.   Operates and maintains laboratory equipment. 

9.   Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.

10. Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.

11. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

12. Assists with managing the laboratory

13. Coordinates student participation on project.

14. Meets with funding agency sponsor and with research team.  Coordinates research team meetings.

15. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.

16. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

17. Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.

18. Keeps inventory of project supplies to make sure replacements are ordered in a timely fashion.

Education:

Ph.D. in relevant field

Experience:

No prior experience required

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

Will be responsible for managing research projects including the Miami Beach Kayak enterococci project and the South Dade Wastewater Treatment plant coliphage project.  These projects involve the design and execution of sample collection plans and laboratory analysis plans.  The projects require frequent communications with the funding sponsors including presentations and reporting.  Students assigned to the project are to supervised and coordinated to advance the objectives of project completion.  As part of this work, the post doctoral associate is also expected to manage the lab and maintain an inventory of supplies to assure that orders are placed in a timely fashion.

PhD in civil/environmental engineering

Experience:

Basic laboratory experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Capable of analyzing environmental data, organizing sample collection programs, designing laboratory analysis plans and preparing reports.
