Job Description

NOTE: This is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

We have an opening for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to develop novel approaches for immunobiology and vaccine development.  This work will be in support of a NIH funded Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Cooperative Research Center. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team.  You will present your work regularly and publish your research and findings, which includes occasional domestic travel. This position is in the Translational Immunology group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will

  • Design and implementation of assays incorporating recombinant DNA technology to construct clones and vectors of interest.
  • Design, perform and analyze protein expression experiments to test, and develop protocols and procedures to produce and purify novel soluble or membrane bound proteins.
  • Design experiments involving synthetic and molecular biology techniques to characterize proteins of interest.
  • Prepare and characterize candidate, nanoparticle-formulated vaccines using standard biophysical/biochemical assays.
  • Troubleshoot initial results and perform protein assay development using molecular biological techniques as needed.
  • Design and Application of biochemical assays to monitor biological pathways in cells and animals.
  • Collaborate with others at LLNL in a multidisciplinary team environment, as well as researchers at other national laboratories, industry, and academia to accomplish research goals. 
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • PhD in biological or physical science or related field.
  • Experience working with nanoparticle characterization.
  • Knowledge of typical molecular biology laboratory instruments.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications we desire

  • Understanding of and experience with membrane protein expression, isolation and characterization by Western blot.
  • Biochemical assay development using liquid column chromatography (FPLC and HPLC).
  • Willing to work with animals and animal procedures.
