Position Summary

The Renaissance Society of America (RSA) seeks a full-time Managing Editor for its journal, Renaissance Quarterly (RQ). The official journal of the RSA and the leading international journal of Renaissance studies, RQ presents some twenty major essays and 400 book reviews per year, engaging all disciplines between 1300 and 1700. Reporting to the Executive Director of the RSA, the Managing Editor oversees all aspects of the editing and production of the journal from the RSA office at the Fordham University Rose Hill campus, in collaboration with the journal’s publisher, Cambridge University Press.

Essential Functions

  • Copyedits research articles, review essays, and book reviews
  • Manages production of the journal, in coordination with Cambridge University Press; reviews issue proofs through multiple stages
  • Trains and supervises freelance copyeditors, and oversees their work
  • Defines editorial policy and style and oversees design issues
  • Consults with journal editors on a variety of editorial matters
  • Supervises and manages work of two Fordham editorial assistants
  • Consults with authors on copyediting and line-editing revisions to their articles and reviews
  • Manages deadlines for authors after provisional acceptance of their articles: submitting final revisions, answering queries, and securing images and image permissions
  • Assists Reviews Editor in determining titles to review in journal and in assigning reviews and answering reviewer queries
  • Ships books from Fordham office to book reviewers
  • Manages shipping data for RSA print subscription members and e-notifications for all members
  • Liaises with Cambridge University Press on a variety of issues, including publishing policy and open access
  • With RSA Executive Director, negotiates publishing contracts not handled by our publisher (e.g., EBSCO)
  • With Executive Director, oversees bidding process for new journal contract, every 5–7 years

Required Qualifications

  • M.A. required, in a humanities field
  • Minimum of two years’ copyediting experience with English-language scholarly publications
  • Experience with the administration of print and online publishing of journals
  • Familiarity with legalities of open access and permissions rights
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, HTML, and Editorial Manager, plus ability to learn new applications quickly
  • Ability to work well with a variety of stake-holders and partners, including publishers, editors, authors, volunteer reviewers, and professional staff
  • Excellent organizational and supervisory skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently and function well in time-sensitive situations
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
