Position Summary

A post-doctoral position is available in the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research in the Herff College of Engineering, University of Memphis. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Eddie Jacobs and a team of faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science and other departments on projects involving autonomous navigation of unmanned aerial systems, sensors for agriculture, environmental, and defense purposes, and other related topics. The post-doctoral researcher will be expected to oversee projects, procedures, and students, conduct field operations, prepare data, and write reports/articles for technical publications as well as participate in future grant proposal development.

Minimum Position Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Experience in mathematical modeling, machine learning, control systems, or artificial intelligence, strong computer programming skills, and fluent verbal and written communication skills in English are also required. The applicant must be a US citizen and be able to obtain an FAA Part 107 license.

Special Conditions

Good experience and background knowledge in one or more of the research focus areas: experience with unmanned aerial systems (fixed wing and rotary wing), autonomous control and navigation, swarm robotics, machine learning and AI applied to drone behavior. Ability to work independently and in a team. Capability to design and perform experimental plans, knowledge of image and non-imaging data-acquisition or strong interest to learn, understanding of statistical analysis procedures and the interpretation of data. Sufficient interpersonal skills in dealing with students (graduate and undergraduate), university personnel and other related groups. Self-motivation and creativity are highly desirable.
