Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Sleep Health Navigator in Pulmonary Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
A Sleep Health Navigator works with the medical staff and physicians to get patients with sleep-disorders scheduled for a sleep study and to provide support in their treatment.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Working with the medical staff and physicians to Identify patients who are at risk for sleep disordered breathing, assessing and educating them regarding how it could be exacerbating their comorbid conditions, to get them scheduled for a sleep study.
  • Coordinate with other divisions including division of cardiology, and department of neurology in the identification of patients with sleep disorders and ensure early referral to sleep physicians and to the sleep lab for sleep studies.
  • Educate the staff and physicians in the department of medicine including in cardiology and general internal medicine, family medicine and neurology on the importance of sleep and how either an un-diagnosed or noncompliant patient could be affecting readmissions or the multiple comorbid conditions they are presenting with, in order for identification and early referral to sleep physicians.
  • Evaluate which study the patient requires by reviewing the entire medical record, including all documentation provided by the physician’s office and entries made by affiliated parties (history and physical, prescriptions, order forms, assessment tools, registration form, study details, study notes, etc.).
  • Resolve discrepancies in conflicting documentation to assure the provision for appropriate patient services.
  • Acquire and verify completion of all documents required by the hospital to ensure authorization to perform the study and to appropriately bill for services provided.
  • Orient the patient to the sleep center experience and explain the procedure(s) to the patient.
  • Provide support for PAP compliance including mask interface selection and sizing, clinical troubleshooting, PAP desensitization and acclimation, downloadable or web-based reporting

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35 , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.  Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility .  Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine .  Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Proof of current New Jersey State License as a Polysomnographic Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Proof of current polysomnographic technologist license in New Jersey OR other license including Polysomnography in the scope of practice (RN, RT, or LPN).
  • Maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    • The American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Standards for Accreditation requires clinical competence. While the AASM standards may overlap with some state license or national credentialing requirements, they are an independent set of rules. As such, clinical staff must meet at least ONE of the following:
    • Be registered by the ABSM, BRPT, or NBRC.
    • Qualification to obtain, or possession of the CCSH (Certification in Clinical Sleep Health) preferred
    • Learn the functions of the following:
      • BRPT
      • RPSGT
      • AASM
      • AAST
      • NJ Board of PSG
    • Understand the relationship of the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists and the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist credential:
      • Purpose of the RPSGT exam
      • Requirements necessary to renew the RPSGT credential
      • Defined timeline to renew the RPSGT credential
      • Prior to the expiration of the employee’s current credential, submit recertification materials as required to the BRPT or retake and pass the RPSGT exam to maintain a current, valid credential
      • Provide a copy of the RPSGT certificate to the Hospital for retention at the corporate office and continually provide new copies as old credentials expire
      • Understand the impact of non-registered clinicians on corporate operations
    • Miscellaneous learning opportunities and assignments
      • Attend meetings, classes and seminars or participate in distance-learning as needed for performance improvement, advancement in the field and in compliance with national and state laws and standards to assure longevity in the field
      • Attend sleep-related seminars, conferences, educational symposiums and/or preparatory courses to improve probability of passing the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) credential and expansion of polysomnographic knowledge
    • Continuing Education Credits
      • Understand and comply with specific requirements mandated by the AASM’s Standards for Accreditation of Sleep Disorders Centers, the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists re-certification procedures and NJ State Board Of Polysomnography Regulations
      • Minimum CEC requirements
        • Earn no less than 10category-1 CEC’s annually AND
        • Earn no less than 20 category-1 CEC’s biennially AND
        • Earn no less than 30 category-1 CEC’s triennially
        • Earn no less than 50 category-1 CEC’s every five years
          • Annually is defined as the day and month each year that coincides with date of hire.
          • Biennially is defined as the day and month every two years that coincides with date of hire
          • Triennially is defined as the day and month every three years that coincides with date of hire
          • Category-1 is defined as attendance to BRPT-approved national, regional, state and local sleep related programs, Non-biased manufacturer-sponsored courses and Instructor-CECs earned by teaching a sleep-related course.
        • BRPT-approved providers include the BRPT, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Association of Sleep Technologists, the Australian Sleep Technologist Association and the Canadian Sleep Society. (The BRPT can be consulted for other approved providers.)
    • Miscellaneous learning opportunities and assignments
      • Attend meetings, classes and seminars or participate in distance-learning as needed for performance improvement, advancement in the field and in compliance with national and state laws and standards to assure longevity in the field

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Attain and maintain documentation of attendance to, participation in and compliance with orientations, meetings, training sessions, periodic technician meetings, educational functions and courses and promptly provide proof to the hospital as
    requested.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Qualification to obtain, or possession of the CCSH (Certification in Clinical Sleep Health).
  • At least one year’s experience as a sleep technologist.
