Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist II in Genome Editing Shared Resource at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey .
The primary purpose of the Research Teaching Specialist II position is to coordinate and assist in maintaining the core’s production colony based on project schedule, be responsible for the generation of mice by pronuclear and ES cell microinjection/electroporation, hormonal preparation of mice, harvesting of fertilized/unfertilized oocytes, in vitro fertilization, oviduct and uterine transfer of injected embryos, rederivation of mouse lines, weaning of mice, tail tip biopsies and animal husbandry, reagent preparation, maintain controlled substance usage logs.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Coordinates and maintains the core’s production breeding colonies with its needs based on project schedule.
  • Conducts daily operations during microinjection and IVF sessions and coordinating the activities of other technicians to maximize efficiency.
  • Microinjection or electroporation of DNA constructs/CRISPR reagents into fertilized eggs to generate transgenic and genetically modified mice.
  • Microinjection of ES cells into blastocysts to generate chimeric mice.
  • In vitro fertilization to generate embryos for oviduct transfer.
  • Rederivation of mouse lines.
  • Facility generated chimera and transgenic founder breeding.
  • Schedules hormonal preparation of mice for harvesting eggs, fertilized embryos at different stages of development and pseudo pregnant mice.
  • Oviduct and uterine transfer of the embryos.
  • Keeps detailed records of birth/death/transfer of generated mice at the facility.
  • Coordinates tissue biopsies with investigators as advised by supervisor.
  • Weaning of breeding colonies.
  • Timely report and results to the supervisor.
  • Maintains controlled substances use log and obtains replacements.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in biology, animal sciences or a related field plus two (2) years’ experience in generation of genetically modified mice by pronuclear and ES cell microinjection/electroporation, hormonal preparation of mice, harvesting of fertilized ova, oviduct and uterine transfer of injected embryos, weaning of mice, tail biopsies and animal husbandry or a Bachelor’s Degree plus three (4) years of the above-mentioned experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of embryo freezing and sperm cryopreservation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) as required by the laboratory.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to the candidate with proven efficiency in generating genetically modified founders using C57BL/6 strain, intracytoplasmic sperm injection in mouse eggs using Piezo drill and experience in mouse in-vitro fertilization using different strains especially C57B1/6.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Laboratory environment, moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to rodents in barrier vivarium.
