UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 16 academic departments (14 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre-academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and SkaggsSchool of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high-throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. Under supervision of the Principal Investigator and in conjunction with a senior researcher in the Principal Investigator’s laboratory, the Staff Research Associate candidate will participate in 1) Assisting in mouse colony maintenance, including breeding, weaning, and genotyping. 2) Assisting with performing histology, immunohistochemistry, and immunostaining on human and rodent samples from multiple projects, using standard protocols. 3) Assisting with genomic imaging projects and other duties include performing lab maintenance, ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, and preparing buffers and solutions as needed. Maintain laboratory environmental health and safety activities, including chemical waste and biological waste disposal. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Theoretical knowledge of molecular biology and chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Ablilty to take direction, be detail oriented, follow step-wise protocols, and perform repetitive tasks in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

  • Able to learn and carry out new procedures with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Demonstrated ability to use common laboratory equipment, and perform RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, and quantitative PCR assays.

  • Ability to assist lab personnel in mouse colony maintenance.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in standard English, in writing, electronically, and by spoken word with lab members.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with P.I., supervisor, postdoctoral scholars, and other members of the research group.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety including biohazard handling & disposal techniques, & the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety regulations.

  • Knowledge in histology, histochemistry and immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be able to work in environment where biological and chemical hazards are present.

  • Must be able to work with postmortem human brain tissue.

  • Must be able to work with mice.

  • Must be willing to work a variable schedule to accommodate research needs.
