Chief Development Officer

Job Summary:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is the leader of the fundraising team for the organization. The CDO works with the CEO to build the revenue strategy for the year, supports a team of fundraising professionals to raise the annual fundraising goal, works with the CEO to utilize the CEO’s time effectively and efficiently in meeting with donors, works with the board of directors to facilitate their fundraising efforts, carries a portfolio of major donors, and supports an organization-wide culture of philanthropy.

The CDO must have demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a successful, comprehensive fund development program and preparing an annual development work plan to achieve goals. The CDO must be an inspiring leader with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. A strong work ethic combined with honesty and integrity are absolute requirements as is a dedication to the mission of Make-A-Wish. A collaborative style will result in a strong departmental and Chapter structure, ensuring success for all. The successful candidate will be flexible and adaptable to situational changes.

What You Will Own Responsibility For:

  • Lead the organization’s development and marketing strategies with participation from the CEO, staff, and board of directors; chart the organization’s course in fund development
  • Establish strong and appropriate relationships with CEO, staff, governing board, regional councils, volunteers, donors and the general community
  • Create and implement a comprehensive strategic development plan, outlining specific fundraising objectives, corresponding revenue targets, addressing annual giving, campaign, and planned giving and long-term, multi-year fundraising strategies
  • Lead Major Gifts efforts across the entire Chapter
  • Develop a donor retention plan and establish goals, objectives, and metrics to increase the rate of retention across categories
  • Oversee the launch and execution, with the CEO and outside campaign counsel, of a campaign
  • Continue to expand the existing development program focusing on diversifying revenue sources while developing and stewarding donor relationships to increase the base of support from current and potential donors
  • Assist in the development of an annual operating budget and maintain timely reports on budget to actual for the CEO and Board of Directors
  • Recruit, hire, train, coach, assess and supervise fundraising staff. Provide career development opportunities for all fundraising staff with specific attention paid to the identification and development of future leaders
  • Serve as the CEO’s designee with regional advisory boards, local volunteers and staff, providing direction, support, recruitment and training as necessary to advance organizational priorities
  • Serve as a member of the organization’s leadership team
  • Regularly scan the communities served by the organization for new business prospects, fundraising opportunities, cause marketing partners and local leads to promote the Make-A-Wish brand
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO and MAW America to coordinate programs and potential national sponsors
  • Assure the organization’s culture, systems and procedures support fund development
  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure timely, accurate and comprehensive development reports and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring, forecasting and implementation
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct
  • Other duties as assigned by the CEO

Your Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

We are seeking candidates offering the following qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for a Master’s degree, and 12+ years of successful development/marketing or an equivalent of work experience
  • Management experience with increasing levels of responsibility
  • A demonstrated track record of building a strategic development function including, but not limited to, annual fund, major gifts, corporations and foundations, planned giving, donor cultivation and stewardship, and event management
  • A record of quantifiable success in development which encompasses many areas of donor segmentation, research and cultivation. A quantifiable track record of major gift fundraising
  • A demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, to build public support, to strengthen infrastructure, to inspire staff and the board of directors, and to develop effective programs
  • Exceptional financial, organizational, and administrative skills
  • The ability to plan, set goals and objectives, organize, and follow through
  • A strong interpersonal and communication skill set and demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of varied and changing constituencies, including staff, board members, potential donors, volunteers and the like
  • Capital/comprehensive campaign experience is a plus
  • A track record as an effective communicator with strong verbal and written skills; adept at writing proposals, solicitation letters, donor correspondence, and materials to enhance fundraising
  • Computer literate; knowledge of Word and Excel and experience with database systems. Experience with Salesforce preferred; strong fiscal knowledge and data analysis ability
  • Position requires occasional travel throughout the region and flexible hours
