Job Summary

The general responsibilities of the position are:
1) To maintain an in house facility for crystal growth and crystallography. The facility is used by several investigators who belong to the laboratories within the macromolecular structure group (msg.ucsf.edu).
2) Training users in how to use the facilities for x-ray crystallography and small angle scattering. Be aware of misuse as far as possible.
3) Participate in orientation of new users to approved practice and procedures in the lab.
4) To maintain robotic systems for making solutions, for setting up crystallization trials, for remote monitoring of crystallization experiments. This involves maintaining replaceables, and calling service as needed.
5) To maintain monthly billing based on usage of the crystallization facility.
6) To order supplies as anticipated based on usage. The successful applicant should have some aptitude for minor repairs and diagnostics of electro mechanical systems.
7) Some possibilities to assist and participate in experimental design and execution as time and demand may be available.

The position will report to Dr. Robert Stroud in the department of Biochemistry and Biophysics UCSF.

Department Description

The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics is a large teaching and research department within the School of Medicine. The department offers graduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Systems Biology, and Genetics degree programs, in addition to providing courses for medical, dental, and pharmacy students. Each program includes interdepartmental faculty representing: the Cancer Center, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiology, Pediatrics, Microbiology, Pathology, Anatomy, Psychiatry and Neurology departments, as well as our own. In addition to offering course work, the department’s other main goal is to provide an environment where outstanding research in diverse areas of interest is conducted. A close, collaborative spirit among 33 faculty facilitates a research atmosphere that is both productive and exciting. Moreover, many colleagues from other departments have joint appointments with Biochemistry, which forms an added active pool of investigators with whom we closely collaborate. The Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics employs about 60 postdoctoral researchers and 30 graduate student researchers.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in physics biochemistry, chemistry or in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to multitask
  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with many different users
  • Attention to issues as needed, follow up responses.
  • Good record management for monthly billing to labs within the group (msg.ucsf.edu)
  • Check and maintain accuracy of the instrumentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good charisma to facilitate user comfort with many users
  • Good awareness of any problems noted that arise
  • Electro mechanical skills desirable for small repairs and adjustments.
