Research Associate – Experimental Agricultural Fluid Dynamics

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to an innovative research in agricultural fluid dynamics through assisting a building of next generation wind generator that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds.

Position Summary

The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks a research associate to (1) design and engineer wind tunnel that can experimentally simulate and control the wind conditions in farm field (2) investigate the important fluid dynamical features of the farm field to improve the pest monitoring systems. Beyond the main duty, the research associate is expected to also support and assist graduate student and postdoctoral scholars’ projects involving various fluid mechanics research, including but not limited to biomechanics of insect wings, biomechanics of semi-aquatic insects.

Ideal candidates would have strong background in experimental fluid mechanics in the context of agriculture and has experience in building the wind tunnel and building a successful experimental setup using the wind tunnel.

The position includes a 12-month initial appointment, available starting as soon as possible, with the possibility for renewal pending satisfactory performance, funding and available work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designing and building a wind tunnel for agricultural application. (25%)

            -Construction of wind tunnel capable of controlling wind profile and turbulence intensity

            -Development of software for robust operation of wind tunnel

  • Designing and conducting experiments using the wind tunnel (25%)

            -Project 1. Wind-informed pheromone trap for improving the pesticide application timing

            -Project 2. Quantifying foreign pest invisibility of a farm field using insects as a biosensor

            -Project 3. Biomechanics of migration of insect pests

  • Writing and publishing peer reviewed research papers (25%)

-Research associate is expected to write and edit research paper coming out of the lab.

  • Writing proposals for external funding for research projects as a Co-PI and collaborator (25%)

-External funding sources includes USDA, NSF, DOD

-Research associate is expected to develop and write grants with the PI

-1 Grant submission every 2 month is expected

Qualifications

PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other relevant field.

Skills in computer programming such as Matlab

Skills in experimental fluid mechanics, such as shadowgraph, particle image velocimetry, hotwire anemometry

Basic knowledge in circuit designs

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

SUPERVISION: Supervised by Dr. Chris Roh, Assistant Professor, Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering

Supervision Exercised: The research associate will supervise graduate students, undergraduate students, and visiting scientists involved in research on various projects.
