The Division of Pathology within the Emory National Primate Center (Emory NPRC/ENPRC) is currently seeking a Veterinary Pathologist. Dedicated to discovering causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of disease, Emory National Primate Research Center is improving human and animal health and lives worldwide. The Center’s research programs include studies related to infectious diseases (such as HIV, SARS-CoV-2, Zika and malaria), vaccine development, neuroscience, and transplantation. We maintain a colony of approximately 3,000 nonhuman primates, including rhesus monkeys, cynomolgus monkeys, pigtail macaques, sooty mangabeys, squirrel monkeys, and chimpanzees. A rodent vivarium is also located on site.
Emory’s National Primate Research Center has 366 staff members, 50 faculty scientists, 42 faculty in residence, and 29 postdoctoral fellows. The ENPRC grounds its research in scientific integrity; expert knowledge; respect for colleagues; commitment to diversity; an open exchange of ideas; and compassionate, quality animal care. Supported by $87.9 million in research funding (all sources) in FY 2020, The Center’s researchers are making discoveries in microbiology and immunology; neurologic diseases; neuropharmacology; behavioral, cognitive, and developmental neuroscience; and psychiatric disorders. The Center also works to advance vaccine development for infectious and noninfectious diseases, paves the way for earlier diagnosis of and new treatments for illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, defines the neurobiology and genetics of social behavior to support new therapies for autism spectrum and other disorders as well as drug addiction, and teaches us how interactions between genetics and environment shape who we are. The Center follows regulations and guidelines established by the NIH, the US Department of Agriculture, and more. Since 1984, ENPRC has been fully accredited by AAALAC International, the gold seal of approval for laboratory animal care.
The minimum qualifications for this position include a DVM (or equivalent) degree and eligibility for ACVP board certification. While there are no additional requirements, candidates should be motivated, dependable, and detail-oriented; applicants with a PhD degree and/or prior experience (1-3 years) with diseases and pathology of nonhuman primates are preferred. Specific training in nonhuman primate pathology will be offered as needed. The primary job responsibilities include providing diagnostic pathology services, both in support of the clinical care of the nonhuman primate and rodent colonies and in support of ongoing research projects. The successful applicant is also expected to engage in collaborative and/or independent research, and to participate in teaching laboratory animal and primate pathology to laboratory animal veterinary residents. The salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience.
