Position Description:

The University of Iowa, College of Dentistry open post-doctoral research scholar position in the Moreno/Petrin/Venugopalan Laboratories at the Iowa Institute for Oral Health. Our laboratories focus in understanding the Genetic and Epigenetic Causes of Orofacial Clefting, Skeletal Malocclusion Anomalies and Hemifacial Microsomia. We are interested in identifying genotype/epigenotype-phenotype correlations underlying the phenotypic variations present in these conditions. We utilized a myriad of phenotypic approaches that leverage both 2D and 3D dentofacial patient records combined with modern phenotypic methodologies to characterize phenotypes amenable for genetic and epigenetic studies of craniofacial variation. We also have several different sample cohorts available for genomic analyses. Dr. Lina Moreno is the DEO of the Department of Orthodontics and works primarily on Skeletal Malocclusion Anomalies. Dr. Petrin is an Assistant Professor at the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research and works primarily on Orofacial clefting. Dr. Shankar Venugopalan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and works primarily in Hemifacial Microsomia.


Duties will include:



  • Data generation, analyses, and interpretation.

  • Results dissemination at professional meetings

  • Manuscript preparation

  • Grant writing

Education Requirement:

  • PhD in Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Oral Biology, Oral Sciences, or a related scientific discipline.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in Molecular Biology, Genotyping, DNA sequencing techniques, Analytical skills in Whole Genome Data.

  • Proven ability of independent research,

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, and publication record.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Background in human craniofacial development, genetics of human craniofacial anomalies and dental related sciences is preferred.
